Basenji proof

Basenji Talk
  • I hope baby gates work for you… my basenji/whippet mix vaulted over one, leaving her much larger (65 lb standard poodle) playmate behind. Guess I have the typical basenji escape artist.

  • baby gates have never worked for any of my children and I doubt it will for my puppy. I have tricks though and have learned with my children ways :) My kids have prepared me for a basenji lol. I really think Guru is going to fit right in with my human pups :D

  • I use large river rocks for gaps at the bottom of our fence. My two would dig in the sand to cool off or get warm. They never really dug at the edge of the fence.

I have also used zipties and extra pieces of chain link fence to patch the weird spots in a hurry.

Beta as a rescue would try to gnaw on my moulding corners or the trim wood on my staircase. I found the edible Nylabones were a great distraction and took about 2hrs to eat. The teething nylabones were either too soft or hard and would cause gums to bleed. The edible ones are the only Nylabones I use.

Caesar has eaten a hole in the carpet all the way to the pad. Sometimes training is the only way to go when natural insticts come in. It turned out that there was a crack in the concrete under the carpet and he always tried to sniff there. Now when he displays that "making the bed" or scratching activity I alwasy try to stop him before he gets started.

I found basic training to be wonderful. It helped me understand Caesar better and to stop saying "no" all the time. It also taught Caesar the differences between play time and time to listen.

Hope that helps a bit!! Good Luck….basenji teething time is always a trying time!!

  • Oh, and covered trashcans…..Caesar knows how to step on the pop up lid buttons or use his nose to get to the trash....sneaky little devils.....

So much for that new trash can with the "pop up lid" that my wife claims would solve the garbage dog problems. :D :D

    Sneaky little scavengers.:D

  • lol take the pedal off of the bottom than they cant step on anything. That is how ours is (thanks to my 3 year old ds:rolleyes: ) you will have to lift up the lid but than you wont have them getting into it. There is also a cool trash can that has a sensor but Im sure my kids and pup would figure it out in no time :)

So far our resident varmint hasn't figured it out, but it is nice to know if she does, I have another move in store for her.:) Thanks

  • I thought I was so clever when I got a few pop up covered trach cans. If Joey can't open it by stepping on the pedal, he just knocks it over! No problem.
I would put away the shoes at the front door if your B will have access to them. Joey loooooooooooooooves shoes! (If you want a new pair of shoes, well then of course keep them out! :D) and that goes for remodeling too. If you need a room remodeled, just leave the little B to do his work. It's free demolition!!! I am thinking of redoing my bath….

  • I would fix that gap asap. If the B learns that it's a weak spot, it will never forget, and then it may take even more extensive measures to B-proof it. Even if it couldn't fit through now, it could probably dig out in 2 minutes. It's not enough to be B-proof now, you've got to stay a step ahead. I even suggest putting a trench of lava rock around the inside of the fence. B's do not like to dig through that stuff.

I guess the shoes will have to be cold in the morning and go into the garage.
Oh I hope our B never does anything to this house (we rent) that would be a sad day for me. I will be with Guru at all times though and if not he will be in his crate or with my dh.

Under our fence all the way around is cement there is no way he can dig his way out. When we were looking into houses to rent we took having a basenji into mind (the owner even put a new taller fence in for us):) On the one side yard there is a grass area ut rocks all alond the fence over there (the ppl who live here before us had a dog we keep finding their doggy toys in the yard)

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

@B5004EVER , sounds familiar! Yes, they do like to make themselves comfy at your expense. One of mine liked to sleep horizontal across the bed, leaving my husband and me to cling to the edges, as you describe. Another caused us to almost die.....laughing. The covers were pushed up, and when we moved them we discovered her sleeping on her back, legs in the air, little butt right next to our heads! Hysterical! But most of the time our Basenjis were trouble free sleeping companions, although on occasion they did snore....

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

I am with JazzysMom… I never barracade my tree... and we never did it when I was growing up either. The only thing my dogs do is eat the candy canes... so what... no different than the licorice I share with them! This morning, Cha Cha was chasing the IG back behind the tree and that was his "hiding place" from her. I do remember growing up that the only time anything was taken off the tree was when I would hang dog bones on it :D Now, who can blame them for scaling the tree then?? We have our presents on the dining table right now... only because I was setting up a "background" for puppy pictures and then if I move them to below the tree... where is Preston/IG going to run and hide after he steals the basenjis toys??

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
