    Hey all!
    I am a mama to two basenjis! My partner and I are starting a podcast about the beautiful creatures that we can’t get enough of! We plan to discuss the history behind the breed, interview various experts, answer questions and discuss the breed we all love so dearly! We also want to share these things as a way to educate potential basenji owners and new basenji owners. Basically anything about the basenji!

    I was hoping all you wonderful people could comment with anything that you would like to hear in the podcast or things you find important to include. We also plan to have a Q+A segment as well as tips from owners potentially involved in at least some of the podcast episodes. I will update with how to find the podcast for anyone interested in being involved in any way including listening in 😊

    You have a Basenji named Giza?! My very first Basenji I named Giza, and I've never heard of another one with that name because I thought it was so perfectly Basenji. I am a bit surprised that there weren't more with that name.

    @giza1 yes! Ours is a 3 1/2 year old tri color and he’s the sweetest! He’s a little old man at heart so we call him Giza the geezer 😂 I’m surprised it isn’t more common too!

    Ha. When our Giza did something exasperating, we would always say, "Giz Louise"! Our Giza rode across Canada on a motorcycle when she was 9 months old. She lived to be 18.

    I had her in an over-the-shoulder type of bag that zipped closed along the top, and had a hole in one end for a dog to stick its head out; she rode between my husband and myself. I'd trained her to lay in the bag, and we'd stop every couple hours so she could stretch her legs. She wore a bandana and had goggles on, she was a great little biker!

    Interesting fact; the first time that we rode across the county I had mothers pull their children away from me, we were bad bikers after all. The second time we rode across - same people, same leathers, same bike - we had a dog with us and people couldn't wait to talk to us! What a difference a little dog made.

    oh, please post a photo of this! I'd love to see it and I'm sure you took one or two along the journey. :)

    Y'know, I really don't think I have any pictures of just her in the bag, I'd have to look. Those were in the days before cell phones. I have pictures of her on the bike.

    I think that a basenji puppy and a two-year-old is a recipe for disaster for many reasons. Both require and crave lots of attention, neither one can be reasoned with, both will want to play with the same toy, both can be stubborn, and the list goes. It is far too much to expect a two-year-old to understand how to get along with any puppy, especially a basenji puppy. If your heart is set on a basenji puppy, then I think you should wait until your child is at least five or six years old.Children that age understand what you are saying about the puppy and you can explain to them why you are saying it. I agree with the person who suggested getting an older basenji or how about a puppy of another breed? t one time in my life I had a basenji and a mixed breed, and they got along beautifully. You may love all the traits of this breed but I was suggest that you talk to owners and their experiences with the basenjis and young children. One cannot count on even the best breeders to give you the full story. Please don't get me wrong. I've had three basenjis and adored them all. I got the first one when my youngest daughter was seven. You don't have to wait that long but two years old is too young, imho. Good luck.

    @melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much.     I think signalling is a great idea, although I have never used it. A friend taught her two Bichons to do it with a bell at the door. My dogs always let me know when they needed out. We had a regular routine, but if a potty break was needed at some other time, restless pacing and trotting toward the door was a pretty clear picture. Never a problem. Worst thing is the sound of a dog beginning to retch and jumping off the bed at 4 a.m. Seldom managed to get outside quick enough!

    @khaipan “We are considering bringing in a female companion around the same age.... he does well at daycare (has lotsa girlfriends) after getting over the fact that his pack member has just deserted him for a few hours. He goes 4-6 hours at a time usually.” Both my first two had problems alone. In fact my first male hated the crate no matter what I did, so I got my second to keep him company. It worked and as long as she was in the crate next to him (two crates side by side), he didn’t scream and would walk In the crate himself. Basenjis just don’t like to be alone for the most part. My first boy chewed his way out of a metal 2”x1” crate, which is when I decided get him a companion. They used to make a kennel air crate which was 1” mesh but I don’t think they make them now. I was lucky he did not hurt himself. When my second passed recently, we hooked up a phone with Skype and put my third B in his cage, then went and drove down the road. We parked up and watched him for 20 mins and he was fine, just sat and looked at the door, no doubt he was still stressed. I am all for medication but only as a last resort, there is always a side effect.

    @phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
