Breeders in the Gilbert area

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • Hi, I bought my last Basenji from Brushy Run, Beverly B. She was a wonderful girl but time called her home. I am wanting to look fir another older female Basenji when I am in Gilbert, AZ this winter. Someone made a recommendation several months ago and I can't find the info. Any recommendations on breeders in that vacinity that breed for health and longevity? I want a mature, healthy female that is non aggressive, good with kids and loves to travel in a car. Suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you!

I get it, everyone wants a healthy dog. Makes sense. But requesting specific personality traits could really narrow your options. Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying that there isn't a Basenji out there that would be perfect. I'm sure there is.
But I do want to remind you that traits like "non-agressive", "good with kids", and "loves to travel" are directly related to how you interact with the dog.

If your children tease (any dog), the dog will learn not to trust them and it will affect the dog's personality. Even to the point of becoming agressive. The dog you get might be fine for a trip to the dog park, but not 6 hours on the highway. But that's something else that depends on you. Recognize that you will need to stop at a rest area and give the dog a chance to stretch their legs (so to speak) -- which could potentially add another half hour to the journey.

Look for a dog that is healthy and happy to be with you. And make sure that you interact with them in a way that encourages the kind of behavior that you want.

  • Thank you for your response. The reason I mentioned those traits is because Brushy Run dogs bred by Beverly were intentionally bred to have those traits. My 3 different basenjis all were great with kids, non agressive and travelled well in the car and motorhome. Everyone loved them because of their temperment......however I did get them as puppies. I'm no longer looking for a puppy but an older retired dog. The breeder should know if their dog possesses these traits. Because of my grandchildren who loved my last Basenji and were very good with her, I don't want to take a chance with an agressive dog. If it limits my options so be it. I am hoping someone who knows where Bevs dog are will respond. She has quit breeding since the loss of her husband. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

oh... yes, that makes so much more sense! A blessing that you had one of their dogs. A shame that you might not have that option this time around. I do hope that you find "just the right dog". :)

  • Thank you. I hope so. I'm also hoping that the breeder that has some of Bevs basenji will post and let me know....or someone will tell me who would be a great choice for me.

  • @abaihya - Have you called other breeders in the area? Go to www.basenji.org and you can search by state.

  • Thank you. Someone posted before who has Bevs basebjis. I am hoping they will see this post and let me know again. In the mean time, I will try your suggestion. Thanks again!

This is not the time of year to look for a Basenji in the Northern Hemisphere, let alone in Kent ! One breeder from there is reputed to have said he had enough advance orders for 4 years after the last year's rush to buy a Basenji ! But you could (maybe) get on a waiting list for next March delivery. Email me privately (address in websites on signature block) for a list of breed club secretaries.

If you belong to Facebook please join the group "Basenji Puppies/Puppys/Puppy’s: Get Educated BEFORE you BUY". You will learn from the group posts and information why the two breeders mentioned above are not considered "reputable" as well as a whole raft of other breeders considered "disreputable". You will also learn what constitutes a reputable breeder. A non-refundable deposit is a red flag, not being able to locate sire and dame test results on OFA is another, contracts where the breeder does not accept full responsibility of their pups or dogs if something goes wrong or you can no longer take care of him/her. Reputable does not mean they have to be a show breeder but usually they are. Not all puppies are meant for the show ring but their breeder should be breeding to the standard as if they were. As noted by Debra, go to www.basenji.org and search for breeders. Most of the reputable breeders are listed here, but not all. Go to https://basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/is-a-basenji-right-for-me, there is a link about screening breeders. These are questions you should ask potential breeders. They should provide you with links the the OFA testing base. DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA are public knowledge. Here is an example of one of my listings on the OFA database.https://www.ofa.org/advanced-search?f=sr&appnum=1415062. For sure Fanconi DNA and PRA DNA must be done, but most responsible breeders also test for hips, thyroid, eyes... however, those results are not always posted a public. But if done, the breeder would have certificates of the testing. Breeders typically show their Basenjis... some do performance events. This activity shows not only the correct conformation (showing) but that and/or performance shows temperament. If you have other questions, please contact me. You can find my email on my website link noted below. And I will comment as Debra said.. many breeder webs are not kept up to date, sad but true...I have always pushed that breeders keep their sites up to date as all "puppy back yard breeders do because people search the internet, but most you can find also on FB.

You may also want to look at the basenji rescue group out of Indianapolis- they may have some dogs looking for forever homes. Or you can go to www.allofcraigs.com, and put in basenji in the search field to start your own nationwide search. Keep in mind that many people found cute puppies 4 or 5 months ago and without researching the breed, bought the puppy in the window. At this point, these families are exhausted and frustrated and sick of their bathroom trash being scattered endlessly around the home! :) Perhaps they didn't read their contract, or they bought their pup from a back yard breeder or pet store and didn't have a contract. Those pups are looking for a home, and if you have the patience to help these pups, they will love you forever! (P.S. I found my Lola and Sophie on Craig's List, as did my sister with her boy from St Louis. ):)
