Rescuing a stray basenji

    He definitely looks like a basenji mix. Maybe beagle or corgi with those short legs. I recommend you find a basenji rescue organization. They tend to not work well with small animals including cats as they have a strong prey drive. They also tend to be best with another dog in the home best option is opposite sex as they have a strong pack instinct and they can tend toward dominance. They can be very affectionate but it depends how they were raised. They like to be warm and dry and tend to pee in the house if it’s raining or cold out. They are really smart and sneaky and they get bored easily which can lead to destructive behaviour. Mine are good with my kids but I would say they would rather not be around kids as they really like to sleep and they can be grouchy when woken up suddenly. So they need a home with someone who is very understanding. With him being on the streets he may be insecure which can lead to some testy behaviour. So someone with basenji experience would be very good for this little man. I would say no cats to be safe and no very young children, maybe 10 and up. A female dog and a stay home adult would be ideal. They aren’t great being left alone for very long periods of time. Thank you for catching him and taking such good care of him. Even taking the time to reach out and find out more about basenjis tells me you are an amazing person!

    @mckay definitely go with Basenji Rescue And Transport https://www.basenjirescue.org/ They will help you quickly and have a large group of people who they can find a good home with. I volunteer with them and have donated to them for years, you can trust them.

    Thank you. I do love dogs and all animals and can't stand to see them suffer. I am in Texas. I just wrote Joanne to see if she can help me out with this little guy. Thank you so much!

    This guy is terminally adorable and you are terminally great for helping.

    Where I am this guy would be adopted in a heartbeat but Texas is a whole different ballgame. Kudos for your work.

    Ditto for where I am. I move a lot of dogs out of Texas, I don't think I've moved any dog TO Texas. (no, that's not true, I just moved one OK to TX... same difference).

    Hi Joanne. We lived in Texas briefly and were surprised by the lack of shelters/adoption facilities. You almost expect that in rural areas, but we lived in the Woodlands, which was a planned development north of Houston.

    Here there is a "service" which picks up dogs, mostly from the Central Valley (CA), and takes them to NorCal, the Pacific NW, and BC. Seems as though spay/neuter has been so successful there that there are more homes than dogs. Here, in addition to no kill shelters, including a program for pets of abused women), the City "Pound" is super nice, with rooms complete with couches for the dogs and cats (makes them more adoptable), courtesy of a bequest by Joan Kroc (McDonalds).

    @carlbick Ah, so you and Connie are not in Puerto Rico - for some reason I assumed you were. It's great that such organisations exist. The health tests I was referring to are those for Fanconi and PRA which Basenjis do need their DNA checking for and which are additional to the normal health checks which would be expected from such a responsible organisation. They are equally essential in the case of Basenjis. Which raises an interesting point - should they be done on dogs which are proven to have at least a mix of Basenji in their ancestry ? Fanconi, I would think possibly but not sure about PRA (progressive retinal atrophy). In view of the similarity to a human's of the configuration of a Basenji's kidneys (the reason they were the subject years ago of so much research by Jackson Laboratories at Bar Harbor, Maine) I wonder if this 'difference' in Basenji kidneys is passed on in a mix ?

    As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

    Thank you all for your comments, went away for a few days on a beach a few hours away from home, and took photos;will have to learn to put them on the forum now. By tomorrow, some of mon petit monstre sera sur le forum. She loved the beach and spent hours playing and looking at the sea. What energy!! I was exhausted but she kept going and then fall asleep suddenly, not wanting to leave the soft sand bed. A real pleasure to have so much space and time to play!

    @ChristyRutherford: When I went to Thailand, the dogs there looked very basenji like. It was hard to see them in the shape they were. Definitly not spoiled as dogs are here. Very thin and most had mange. They are wild there, and you dont pet them, they just kinda run around like squirrles or raccoons. It was very hard for me to see them. I took some pictures, of the healthier ones. I will try and find them. They tended to stay at the temples "temple dogs" because the Monks would care, somewhat, for them. The ones running in towns and villages were much worse looking, some. I would have taken them all home. Goes to show what how different people (not just "us/them) but all of us are different form each other. The guide and I had a wonderful time comparing and contrasting our cultures. I let her know how I treat my dog, and although she said it was nice and she liked dogs, I knew she thought I was crazy. I know what you mean. I was in there a couple of summers ago. Some of the dogs at the temple had mange so bad that they were missing a good portion of their fur not mention the number of dogs wondering around with limps and crooked limbs from being hit by bikes and cars. Funny story…before I went with UT the students from the University there came and two of them stayed with my parents. I brought them over to my apartment to hang out one evening and they went wild for Manning. I mean they took picture after picture and didn't want to put him down. Poor Rascal, my mutt, was sitting there like "hey what about me?" Finally, they explained how the King in Thailand has basenjis and has made them very popular. They were even wearing polo shirts with little stitched pictures of the King's dog on them. Here is a link about the King's dog Tongdaeng, a basenji mix. There is a great book called The Story of Tongdaeng. Inside the book are pictures of the king surrounded by Tongdaeng and his other basenjis.     Hello and welcome. Maggie looks basenji to me too. I agree with what someone else wrote about the "deer legs." She is gorgeous and very lucky to have you in her life.
