Ginger spayed - but hair hasn't grown back (3 mos)

    Hello all,

    I am new here and have a question.

    Recently adopted, what we assume to be a 4 yr old Basenji, and had her spayed back in Oct 2016. Her previous owners didn't want her anymore and failed to get that done and also correct her umbilical hernia.

    My concern is that her hair has not grown back very much since then. Maybe a 1/4 inch since then. Is this typical? Should I be worried? I do have a vet appointment in Feb for a health check, but am curious.

    A few details: I am in the Pacific NW, I have a 14.5 yr old cat as well, and she is absolutely spoiled with high quality food and treats.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Basenji coats aren't very fast growing, so I wouldn't worry about it. Can we see a picture of your Basenji?

    MIne had very little hair on her belly or underneath. It grows slowly-be happy!!

    I am a veterinarian and also own basenjis. My first dog was a basenji mix and the same thing happened to her after she was spayed. What I found was that she was licking the hair off her abdomen when I was in veterinary school. She was doing that because my schedule changed and I was coming home at a different hour than before the time she was spayed. Once I realized that she was licking, I put a collar on her and the hair started to grow back in slowly. The other thing that could do the same is hypothyroidism. That is what my professor first thought was going on but then I realized that she was likcking and once I got it under control, she was ok.

    Basenji hair grows slowly and seasonally. When I trim my dogs tails for shows they take quite awhile to grow back compared to other breeds who have has their hair clipped.

    None of my Basenjis over 30yrs in the breed have a lot of hair on their belly.... in fact most have little to none... I would not be concerned about it.

    Yeah, some take longer to grow back. Actually even my Rotties took a while.

    I think that unless the dog is of a breed that has a continuous grow coat, it will take awhile. Our huskies would take a long time too.

    indeed, thanks everyone! I'm just so happy I can finally have Bindi time :3 she's been going outside everyday, I catch her as she looks like she's about to, she even goes to the door on her own now and whines a little <3 yay! unlike before she's just go where ever because the other dogs did, she's got bigger dogs to play with now who are way better behaved she's got tones of room, her own toys, and she can just chill if she wants I'm still braking her of going on the couch, she mostly does it when I leave the room to get food or go to the bathroom, same with the bed it's mostly my fault because I left something where she can get it or the cat jumps up to get away from her lol they are so cute together ~Kat

    Another favorite but to be used sparingly… laser pens. All my dogs love them and the cat (if the dogs would let him) would chase it for hours. But the papillion goes a bit neurotic while playing and that just gets our B- rilled up (it stops looking so much like play and more like dominance behaviors) so it's rarely (if ever) brought out.

    That sounds good! I am working with the positive reinforcement, and for the most part it works, just in that instance she goes "deaf". I also "clicker" train Callie, and she loves that!

    Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!

    I live in North Carolina, right on the coast and we have hot, hot, humid summers. Sahara loves to sit on the back steps and lay in the sun, but only after I have frozen her with AC, haha! She hates the cold, when I got her it was still cool nights here and I had a time getting her potty trained b/c she just hated the cold weather. I could not find any dog sweaters to fit her, she was only 8 wks. old, the stores were out of them, so I got smart one night and made her one from the arm of one of my husbands hunting thermal underware. She was much happier then once I got it on her, she hated me putting that thing around her neck and legs. I have her sweaters now, got them 75% off this summer. She hates the rain also, but she has on great ocassion gone on her own to potty while it was downpouring, wonders of wonders, most of the time I have to put a leash on her and pull her outside when it is raining, she will go, but not unless I keep saying, "Go Potty, Sahara". She runs like a mad dog back through her doggie door. Can't wait to see what she does if we have snow this winter, should be interesting.
