Looking for bk/wh female puppy

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • I am looking for a black and white female puppy. Would prefer to be about 6 weeks to 2 months old. Any help I finding one would be greatly appreciated.

  • Welcome!

Just a heads up, no responsible breeder will allow a puppy to leave their home at 6 weeks. ;)
Try checking here for a breeder of merit in your area: https://www.basenji.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=111&Itemid=94

  • I second Crazysenji…....
The dogs I meet, that have major behavioral issues, when I'm out walking my dogs, ..... all were separated at 6 weeks. The only puppies I've heard of being separated at 6 weeks 'responsibly' were being trained for major k9 police work and weren't being taken away lightly.

BTW 100% bladder control isn't physically possible until a puppy reaches 6 months anyways....so getting a puppy too early is a moot point. I got my newest pup at about 3 months and there were no bonding issues.

  • Ok. The last one we had, we got at 6weeks. She dies last year at the age of 15. Best companion we ever had. My wife is ready for another one. We would prefer a b/w but a r/w would be great as well. Crazysenji–Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

  • As noted, and in fact it is not legal to place puppies before 8 weeks of age in almost all states.

  • I understand. Just trying to find a good puppy for the family.

  • Just letting you know that breeders or rescues are going to balk a little if you want a puppy at 6 weeks.

    Your best routes for puppies:

Basenji Club of America has a breeder referral list on their website - some of the breeders post litter announcements, some of them you have to call. OR look for a basenji club in your state...or hound clubs sometimes have litter announcements. Some of them are willing to ship.

    • I've seen a couple different rescues have puppies available: Basenji Rescue and Transport, as well as the other ones like colorado basenji rescue. The issue with those is that they usually have waiting lists + the home inspections + not able to ship.

    • Petfinder/craiglists can be a good option if you know how to differentiate between scams and legitimate posts. I never see a lot of purebred basenji puppies on either one though. Mostly adults, or mixed breed puppies (if that's an option for you).

  • As most basenjis are born in Dec, you are very unlikely to find a 2 month old at this time of yr, but you could get on waiting lists for this years breedings.

@tanza yes, but Lovebird of the Congo, sadly, only had one litter and then succumbed to a car racing on country lanes so we never knew if she would come in in Autumn next time around. I always figure to get a rest through end of March to May/June from entering litters born during our winter into the d/b before the Australians start whelping and registering their 'winter' litters, born in our summer - sorry electrician working and he turned the power off at the mains . . . where was I ? OK, back on again. Some revert, some don't. Again, its the rich tapestry of Life With Basenjis !

@rjbasenji - this is the time to align with a responsible breeder for a pup maybe in 2021. Because Basenjis only come in season once a year and their litter size is only 4-6 puppies, it is difficult to find one especially will all the people that "want" one... If you can visit with a breeder that would help you or if not call them on the phone and tell them why you think that a Basenji would be a good fit for your family/lifestyle.

@buzz-carmenator I have sent everyone who mailed me a list of Breed Clubs in the UK with their secretaries email addresses and also that of the Basenji Rescue co-ordinator. BUT - people who want a puppy are advised to read a great deal up about them, including the fact that, in the Northern Hemisphere, at least 95% of litters are born November / December ish. So puppies are unlikely to be available until late February next year at the earliest. Basenji ladies are once-a-year girls, coming into season September / October ish for the most part. Several of the people I have referred to individual breeders have already visited with them and, if considered suitable, have been put on lists for the next litter. However some people have decided that, on closer inspection, a Basenji is not for them and others have visits pending. Have a good read of all the articles, including the Zande Put-Off on my website (see signature block) and then email me privately.

Post me privately (after you have read my website (thanks for the plug, Redial !)) and I will sendyou a list of the Breed Club secretaries. There are quite a few litters on the ground this winter bit I imagine most are sold or at least bespoke. You may need to get on a list for next season.

Glad things are settling down for you. Now is a great time to get on breeders puppy lists. Go to the Basenji Club and contact breeders in states close enough for traveling to. If you're interested in a bit older, be sure to ask if they have any or know of another breeder who may have gotten a puppy back that didn't work out. Good luck in your search.
