Monroe Hochstetler-Princeton MO-Selling 27 Bs at Auction-3/24

  • Anyone familiar with this breeder? All his Bs are registered ACA! He is a USDA licensed breeder and probably sells mostly to dealers/brokers for pet stores although he may sell online. He is going out-of-business!

If you look at some of his inspection reports, this is why one does not buy a puppy at a pet store. At his last inspection in Feb 2010, he had 205 adult dogs and 102 puppies!

Here are the Bs he is selling at the auction. Here is the webpage for the auction http://www.swkennelauction.com/index_files/Auction4.htm and it states that he sold over 1,000 puppies in 2011. Some of his dogs are out of Hestekin lines-Precious Reba and some are named after Hofer dogs such as Ramsie and Rumble but I do not know if they go back to the Hofer lines. My Hofer Zipper who was Fanconi affected was bred to both a Hofer Rumble and a Hofer Ramsie in the late 90s. Most of these dogs are impossible to research the pedigree since they are ACA registered! This is why it is important to research the breeder and the background of the sire and dam. I am trying to obtain more info about these dogs from anyone who attended the auction.

  • Thanks for letting us know, Jennifer. I wonder where these poor creatures will land? The inspection report from Oct 2010 is horrific, describing conditions where dogs had collars embedded into their skin, another dog had matts on his ears the "size of lemons", a female Schnauzer with 7 pups was critically lethargic, and another case where a husky pup was pinning down a smaller pup resulting in bite wounds - while the inspector was there! The auction listing makes it sound like he's doing the world a favor by giving other puppy mills a chance to swipe up these little beauties.

    These poor, poor pups. 😞

  • I am hoping they do not sell and perhaps a rescue group can get some of them at the end of the auction for free or for hardly anything. Most breeders know they only go into season once a year and some will not want buy them and spend money on them to only wait for almost 7-8 months for them to go into season. Also there are way too many males for the number of females and there is an older female who is almost 10 years old. I hate to be blunt but I am just stating the facts about most commercial breeders and how they buy at the auctions.

  • It looks like he also has many Shiba Inus too (18 female and 7 males)… I don't know what if they also go into heat only once a season? If this auction was near me, I would have tried to get there.

  • Sorry but I do not know what these 'dog auctions' are. Can someone explain this to me? How can you have a dog auction??

  • It's all very sad, EXCEPT for the fact that this person will no longer be breeding dogs. I pray all the dogs wind up in better situations.

  • Krunzer, a dog auction happens when a "puppy mill" sells all of its current "stock". Both auctions that are on the above website state that the current owners are retiring and getting out of the business. And while we can "assume" that these owners will no longer be breeding, there's no guarantee that the current 27 dogs aren't purchased by other breeders, who continue to use these dogs solely for breeding. It is so sad to think that a dog has lived 10 years in a cage. Unthinkable.

  • First Basenji's

This stuff makes me so sick, but I thank you for passing on the info, Jennifer.
There have been several folks on my Shiba Inu board who recently got their pups from Princeton, Missouri.
I'm not sure if it's the same breeder… but given that this is a town with a population of 1000, I'm guessing that there are business relations, if not family.

p.s. Shibas go into heat more than once a year. They're an extremely vulnerable breed in puppy mills right now.

  • I understand what you are feeling curlytails. I also had a Shiba Inu, we just had to put her to sleep about 7 months ago). I love both breeds they are both a strong willed individual breed. Anyone who crosses me with shibas or basenjis will never be in my good books. I can't believe that dog auctions are even legal. How horrible is that! Puppy-mills should really be banned…..

  • Can I crosspost this to the BBR list?

    Nevermind. Too late

  • Precious Reba was bred by Hestekin Hills. (Or at least came from 2 Hestekin Hills dogs). Precious Reba's litter brother went to another puppy mill call WL's. I wouldn't be surprised if Budlight Bite didn't come form Hestekin Hills also since she was using the name Budlight on several dogs during the time this dog was born.

Whatever the case, this Hochstetler guy didn't seem to sell many Basenjis? Check out how many of his dogs all have the same birthdate. Of course, this does not neccesarily mean they are from the same litter. Some puppy mills just pick a date and use it for every litter born during that time period.

    253-256 - same BD
    257-260 - same BD
    262-265 - same BD

  • I also noticed the same birthdates! Dogs born in January and sometimes December by a commercial breeder rarely go into the pet stores as there is little demand as they can no longer be Christmas or Valentine Day pups! Usually only if the breeder also sells online do the pups get sold to puppy buyers and not to other breeders. I am surprised that he kept so many possibly related dogs! My Arnie was born in early January 2001 and only two from the litter went to pet stores and one was returned so 5 out of 6 were sold at the auctions. I bought some females-10 months old in Fall 2002 who were sold at an auction because that year there was too many B pups and the dealers/brokers were not buying any so the breeder sold them at auction. Bambi's litter was born December 13 2006 and none of them-4 in the litter made it to a pet store and the breeder was also a dealer/broker so she could have sold them directly.
