• Hello,

I am going to be getting my first Basenji puppy in a couple weeks and can not come up with any ideas on a name for her. Also, I do not really know which puppy I am getting yet, I am either getting my first choice, or my second choice and I will not know until she is around seven weeks old. If anyone has any unique female puppy names in mind I would love to hear them. I will upload a picture of my first pick and my second pick. Can not wait to hear some ideas you guys might have. Thank you in advanced!

  • Oo blue collar is gorgeous.

Maybe a name will come to you when her personality comes out more?

  • the blue collar puppy is beautiful!

  • Who are you getting your puppy from?
    -Joanne

  • yes the blue collar puppy is my first pick πŸ™‚

  • Simone Gaudet.

  • Often the breeder will have a theme or a letter the name must begin with. Or are you thinking of a call name?

  • the breeder is picking the reg name i am talking about a call name.

  • O.K. do you have any idea of what the registered name will be? Sometimes that suggests a call name.

  • Nope, I asked the breeder and she said she does not think the reg name will help with the call name.

  • Then you need to assess the puppy's temperament and see what suggests itself. It's nice to have a short call name. Many people prefer two syllables, but it should be something easy to say and pleasant to hear. And sometimes what you start out with morphs naturally into something different as you get more familiar with your dog. πŸ™‚

  • And then you gotta yell it out the backdoor to see if it flows easily off the tongue. πŸ˜‰

  • One dog to another…..my name is "no, no, bad dog!" what's yours?

  • @giza1:

LOL, that test was exactly what I used when I was trying to think of a name for my youngest girl. The name I was originally thinking and that the breeder liked was the one I tried out and when I yelled it, one of my other dogs came running. So because I thought it might confuse them, I went a different route. πŸ˜‰

  • My breeder was showing our girl Gambit last fall and at the photo the judge turned to him and said, did you really name her damn it. He was not quite hearing her name correctly:)

  • haha. ill try yelling different names out my back door. I just can not think of any ideas at all. Maybe they will come to me once i pick her up from the airport but every time i have picked a puppy up i have always had ideas and this time i am just drawing a blank.

what sort of names do you like? Human names? Music type names? Military? Names that describe the dog?

  • No human names. The only name i kind of like for her is Nismo. I was looking at African names but i could not find anything that was simple enough, i do not want it long. I just want something short and sweet.

  • another thing to keep in mind is how the name shortens. so nismo would naturally shorten to nizzy, which i think is cute. my personal thing is i'll never give a name to a dog that i don't want it to live up to - so things like chaos, nipper, killer, etc are out. but some people like names like that.

  • yeah I know what you mean. She is not going to have any name like that.
