Need help naming my puppy

  • Then you need to assess the puppy's temperament and see what suggests itself. It's nice to have a short call name. Many people prefer two syllables, but it should be something easy to say and pleasant to hear. And sometimes what you start out with morphs naturally into something different as you get more familiar with your dog. :)

  • And then you gotta yell it out the backdoor to see if it flows easily off the tongue. ;-)

  • One dog to another…..my name is "no, no, bad dog!" what's yours?

  • @giza1:

LOL, that test was exactly what I used when I was trying to think of a name for my youngest girl. The name I was originally thinking and that the breeder liked was the one I tried out and when I yelled it, one of my other dogs came running. So because I thought it might confuse them, I went a different route. ;)

  • My breeder was showing our girl Gambit last fall and at the photo the judge turned to him and said, did you really name her damn it. He was not quite hearing her name correctly:)

  • haha. ill try yelling different names out my back door. I just can not think of any ideas at all. Maybe they will come to me once i pick her up from the airport but every time i have picked a puppy up i have always had ideas and this time i am just drawing a blank.

what sort of names do you like? Human names? Music type names? Military? Names that describe the dog?

  • No human names. The only name i kind of like for her is Nismo. I was looking at African names but i could not find anything that was simple enough, i do not want it long. I just want something short and sweet.

  • another thing to keep in mind is how the name shortens. so nismo would naturally shorten to nizzy, which i think is cute. my personal thing is i'll never give a name to a dog that i don't want it to live up to - so things like chaos, nipper, killer, etc are out. but some people like names like that.

  • yeah I know what you mean. She is not going to have any name like that.

  • You may want to wait until you get her and see what kind of personality she has. Sometimes when I look at an animal a name just pops right in my head. Sometimes it can take a while though.

You may want to check out http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names.htm. Be sure to bookmark it though as it can take hours to look through every topic. :)

    There you go. "Enigma"

" A person or thing that is mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand."
    " A riddle or paradox."

lol, or screaming rock n' roll singers… I have one named Ozzy (named after Ozzy Osbourne - registered name Timar's Black Sabbath). Care to guess which of my 4 basenjis is the loudest complainer when he wants to come out of his crate. ;)

  • My first boy was Bushbabies Obviously Jazz, call name OJ… Around the time of OJ Simpson arrest and trial back in the early 90's.... yikes the comments were so annoying that I started calling him O GEE.

You can also think of names and then see what it might translate to in the Living Swahili Dictionary http://www.kamusi.org/

I like the name Pistol, I think it would suit a Basenji, but I don't think I would use it.

  • ok thank you everyone! i will post pictures of the little girl when i get her and her name! :)

  • I like also the name Shanty, sounds cheerful

  • I always had Jazzi for a girl picked out and right now I am liking Lola. And I think my next boy's name would be Jasper.

  • Hmm, we had a goat named Jazzy, and my brother has a snake named Jasper.

  • i have a kitty named jazzy and a kitty named jasper lol.

Thank you Tanza. I was very curious. ill have to check out AKC. Thank you AgileBasenji. Yes i do live here so it would just be for fun and for some experience. I dont blame you on the points tho because it would be alot of money to not get anything out of it.

@Kipawa: I would guess the more the better, but which tests would you consider an ABSOLUTE necessity, and which could a new puppy purchaser let slide - any? I'm picky, and since researching I would want Fanconi, IPSID, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Hemolytic Anemia, Hip Dysplasia, Thyroid and PPM. I'm getting all of these questions from reading and from the links on this forum - thanks to those who have provided all of this great information. Hemolytic Anemia is pretty much gone from the breed, so in looking at the parents, as long as either they or their sires/dams have been DNA Clear, you would not have to worry about HA, as it is a recessive gene and since this is a direct test, offspring are clear by parentage. PPM would be determined with the same eye exam as PRA. There is no test for IPSID, that is where the knowledge of the dogs by the breeder is so important along with Progressive Retinal Atrophy, again there is no test and it is late onset, sometimes as late as over 10yrs or as early as 3yrs. Again important for the breeder to know the background. Hip Dysplasia, you again need to look at the sire/dam, offspring/siblings and their test results. So, I would agree, at minimum, DNA for Fanconi, Current CERF Exam, OFA for hips and the more in the pedigree that has been OFA'ed for hips the better.

@Andrew: Booger is FINALLY registered with his proper name. We've decided to use "Griffin" in our dogs' names as a reference to the half lion/half eagle mythical creatures. The Egyptians borrowed them from other civilizations & used them in art depicting hunting scenes. So Booger is now "Griffin's Pick of the Litter." Very nice choice…cute name. :)

@mauigirl: I wanted to let you all know what I decided on. It's "Sulou's Tri the Good Life". It took quite the progression to get there. It had to go through "life of riley" to get the "good life" part. It was actually Susan's suggestion and was something I had thought about. And I was able to get "Tri" in there after all. It's kind of appropriate, we're always joking about what a hard life the dogs have, given that they seem to have sleep-a-thons oh, you know, every day!! But I'm pleased with it and couldn't have gotten there without your suggestions so thank you! Very cute name… I really like it
