OMG!!!! Is our dog insane?????

    This is great news! That's what I did with Buddy, just leaving him loose while I did yard work and looking in the window, then going to the store and then just increasing the time. He does very well in a crate but leaving him in there all day is too long.

    Hopefully it will work for you. I haven't had a problem with leaving them out at night, now during the day, if they get PO'd at me, they may decide to redecorate one of the cushions! LOL

    The only concern I would have with giving him the kong in the beginning is that he would finish it and then cry when he woke up. If you wait until he wakes up by himself and then potty him and give him the kong, then he may forget about crying by the time he finishes the kong. On the other hand, if you give him the kong when he wakes up, you may be re-enforcing the behaviour of waking up and crying to get what he wants. It's like a double edged sword-do you or don't you? This is a decision you will have to make and try out. Sorry I can't be of more help, but every dog is different, just like kids!

    I hope your girl is okay! I had a foster who ate carpet before I obtained her and I did not know it-they put it in her crate. The strings were ripping her intestines and she had to have 50% of her intestines removed. Please have your girl x-rayed to determine if anything is stuck. My girl had to go to Gulf Coast Vet Specialists in Houston to have the surgery because my regular vet thought it could be complicated and it was!

    Hello Everyone,

    I just wanted to give you all a further report on Queen Zola! Today was a GREAT day for her. I don't know if it's the DAP diffuser, the calming collar, the Thunder Shirt, or just the fact that we have been slowly training her to be loose in the house by increasing her "alone" time. But today was a big test for Zola: it was the first day she was alone in the house for a full 8 hours…. and she did WONDERFUL!!!!! I have taken the advice of most of you and left her with a "smart toy" to challenge her and keep her busy. I was SO excited to call my hubby and tell him that I walked into the house today to find her sitting in her spot on the couch... quietly... no accidents or disasters awaiting me. It was GREAT!!!!!

    Tomorrow is a really long day for us so Zola gets to go to doggy daycare! I just wanted to follow up with all of you. We are so proud of our girl. And yes, we have been talking with our BRAT coordinator almost daily through this first month. We are just so happy!!!!! And so is Queen Zola! :)

    Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

    What type of training are you interested in? Is this a housebreaking issue, obedience problem, or some behaviour you want to discourage? Since you have posted in behavioural problems, I assume you are having some difficulties with something. If you are more specific it might be easier to point you in the right direction, i.e. to an obedience trainer or an animal behaviourist.

    I think neutering him will do the trick. Max never mounted anyone or anything after he was neutered :) Tyler, the male that I have now, was used by a backyard breeder for breeding. He was neutered at the SoCal Basenji Rescue–I think he was about 4 or 5 when that was done. I have him and his daughter (who was spayed), and I haven't seen Tyler do any mounting since I've had them (about 6 months now).

    Thanks for your replies. I guess in the spontanaity of the moment I did as I do with my other dogs, a no and then a quick taking the thing away since I'm boss and I'm the owner of everything ultimately. I do believe Rowdy was not being the bad growling type bite – he took his front teeth and nipped at my arm, pinching it, but it hurt! I will try to work on the "leave it" command, since I taught that to my mom's poodle and it worked well. Rowdy is smart and is finally getting some of the house rules down. Though he's sneaky when he isn't resting beside you and you forget to watch him... :)

    Thanks everyone. I am so very appreciative of your advice. Housesitting is a great idea, but not an option for me as I have 5 teenagers and a husband to "watch". I tried Apolo in his home for the day and when I picked him up at night (I just couldn't leave him there by himself overnight) he went bonkers from being alone all day. I took him to a kennel out in the country as the accomodations at his vet would have meant that he had to be crated all the time which IMO is especially not an option for a big dog!! I worry about Apolo stressing out and have called the kennel to see how he is doing. I will visit as well. I'm really not certain that the kennel would let me know if he was stressing. I don't really know as this is the first time I had to use one. I think I will start another thread on what to look for in a kennel. Once again, learning on the fly!!! I am doing my best and asking as many questions as I can. I also think I may start a thread on how Bs react to Bordatella (I always say, Bortadella, isn't that sausage :D) since I know someday I will have to take Joey to a kennel. I am also going to look at kennels now so that I can choose the best one. So far I have been fortunate and the breeder has been able to board Joey. I think it's like going to Disney World for him!!! He isn't all wigged out to see me when I pick him up!
