Basenji in CA needs surgery - please offer assistance or referrals

Basenji Rescue
  • Hello Basenji Community Members,

My dog needs a surgery to his lower jaw bone and left scapula (shoulder blade). $500.00 has been paid to the doctor, and we still need to pay $1500.00 before the veterinarian can begin the surgery, and we don't have the money. One of the children left the gate open and he got out into the street and got hit by a car and my neighbor rescued him. He is a sweet, well-behaved dog, and we have two children that love him very much. He was born on 1-3-05 so is just now 6.5 years old and should have many good years ahead of him. He is on an IV with salts, sugars and proteins to keep his strength up until surgery. Everything totals $3,000 with aftercare and hospitalization.

I have already applied for assistance with:

    1. In Memory of Magic (IMOM.org)
    2. The Orange County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (www.orangecountyspca.org)
    3. Affordable Vet Service (awaiting copies of x-rays which I have to pick up on CD and deliver because the doctor doesn't email them)
    4. Credit Care (denied)

However, I have not received any assistance yet. So, if anyone in the community knows another good resource for help in emergency situations, please let me know asap and I will follow up. I won't go into extenuating circumstances of the financial situation but will say that for us I know that it is temporary and we will certainly give back to the organizations that help people through difficult times with pet emergencies.

    God Bless, Love, Kathy Kern

UPDATE: Thank you for the messages and wishes and thoughts received so far! We have found a different veterinary doctor to perform the surgery! We still owe the last one and now have to pay the new vet doctor but he is going to do it before we pay him. We spent whatever we had to the last one already and we need to pay something to the wonderful new vet and we are still looking for information. Please let us know if you have any information on where we may get assistance. Thank you!

  • i hope your able to get this dog the surgery he needs. Do let us know how it's going.

  • I don't know anything about this vet, but will he not work with you on payment? Many vets will treat dogs in urgent need on a payment plan or for a discounted rate. The vet does have some money upfront. Perhaps you could work out some sort of payment schedule for the balance or put part of the bill on a credit card, so the surgery can be done? If not, maybe another vet could be more flexible. Leaving the dog at the facility on IVs seems like it might make the bill larger and prolong the dog's discomfort or pain. You're in a hard spot, and I wish both you and your poor dog the best.

@Rocky1: Don't worry anyone,Dogs are coming home to me here at Jaroufa Hounds. Richard always knew that he could bring dogs back and his son finally found me. Anubis and Anuket will stay with me until a home is found or I will keep them . Kathryn Are they still available? How old are they? We presently have a 20 month old r/w well behaved basenji that we are thinking about getting a playmate for. Brindle is prefered but will consider another r/w or Tri from as young as a puppy to 2 years old male. Thank you Ruben

Dear Basenji Forums Community, I am sure many of you have been wondering what was the outcome of this rescue effort. Well, let us tell you it was unexpected. A rescue mission that was supposed to unite our community to help save a dog turned into a complete opposite and brought us apart. I would like to thank everyone who stepped in to help and put their time and money to attempt to save this dog and offer him a life without neglect. Members who volunteered themselves for this mission had many years of experience with the breed, with both ill-tempered rescues, and those that have been fabulous. They had enough experience to make a determination whether to attempt this or not. While this dog had issues it is imperative to keep in mind he was a just a puppy, and someone was willing to give him a chance. Others may have disagreed on the reasoning for attempting this, but at no time they were given the right to derail this mission and use this forum to publicly attack and discredit members whose only intentions were to help save this dog. As a result of the actions of certain members our whole community suffered: The dog was not saved Forum rules about code of conduct were broken Existing members were publicly offended and discredited New members were exposed to public arguments Our community lost potential member referrals Members had to be suspended from the forum It is really too bad and sad, because we built this community to bring together basenji owners, breeders, and exhibitors throughout the world. To be hopeful that they could help one another and dogs in need. Thank you again for trying to help. All donation have been refunded and no more assistance will be attempted. Which, of course, is unfortunate for the basenji in need. As a last note please remember to review our forums code of conduct and forum rules and to treat others with utmost respect. Like the Basenjis, each of us is unique with our unique character, but our admiration and respect for this breed have brought us together and make us a community. Disregard for our forum community rules will not be tollerated on this forum. Please contact Basenji Forums staff directly at admin@basenjiforums.com if you have any questions or concerns. This thread is closed for public discussion.

Taz has been in foster care through the Midwest Dog Resuce Network since he was turned over by the breeder (I believe around 8 months old). He had two sisters in foster care with him for a short time but they were adopted quickly. They were all shown on the BRAT website but were not evaluated by, or in the care of BRAT. He is such a handsome boy, I had given some serious thought to adopting him until they updated his profile to say that "he likes to be the boss". My female B absolutely has to be the boss of all other dogs (!) so I knew this combo wouldn't work out :( Here is the link to the organization caring for him: http://midwestdogrescuenetwork.com/default.aspx

That's what I was guessing, Jannie, but I didn't remember your name, just Gracie and Roxie's. Must be all those years of being known as "Gena's (or one of the other kids') Mom" and knowing other mothers the same way. :p I'll let you know as soon as I talk to Laura today what's up. Thanks again, Alex. I know we've had issued with bots and trolls, so I understand not recommending posting email addresses.
