• I really don't like the dog tags I have for Kipawa. I believe they have nickel in them, and they are 'staining' the white area of his neck (yes, I am fussy 🙂 ). I have tried brushing a light coating of clear nail polish on them, but that doesn't seem to work. What kind of tags are you using? Do they make any discolouration on your b's?

Right now, Kipawa has three tags on his collar:

    • one with his name, address and phone number
    • one indicating he has received his rabies shot (this came from the vet)
    • one indicating he is licenced in our city (this came from our municipality)

How many of you have multiple tags on your b's collar? I'm also wondering if I could put the rabies and licence info on one tag, which would mean only two tags to wear. I do have to say that I kind of like the clattering more than one tag makes. If I let him off leash in a fenced in area, I can hear where he is.

I like hearing where my dog is too! Saves me a lot of looking around when I am in the fields or bush. You can get rid of one tag by having his name and phone number embroidered on his collar. Better anyhow, because he has to lose the whole thing before he loses his "identity". Rabies you are pretty much stuck with, and the license as well…...I think you need the original tag, so you are stuck with that. You could perhaps sew the tags into a little bag, so they don't stain his neck. My guy only wears his collar when he is outside, never in the house, so I have not found it to be a big problem. 🙂

  • Kipawa wears his ID tags in the house too. Though we are ULTRA careful about him near doors that lead outside, you can never say 'never'. He is microchipped, but a name and phone number is so easy for people who might come across him if he got out.

The 'name/phone number' on the collar is a good idea - thanks! I will look at those online. I have seen both the embroidered ones and ones where a small metal tag is a part of the collar.

I think these are the best. I have the ones that slip onto the collar because I personally don't like the jingle. I don't believe the stainless ones will stain the white. I don't keep my rabies or municipal license on my dogs because of the soft metal they use often wears out. I just keep them handy at home should the need to provide proof of either ever arise.

+1 I love their collar tags, I have used those for years. The SS tags are extremely durable and you can get them to fit on martingale or limited-slip collars which is really nice. At least one of my dogs will chew on the dangling tags (darn bendy basenji necks ) and basically ruined the rabies tag and municipal license tag, so I just don't put them on when they are wearing collars.

I swear by having that info where people can see it. Even some shelters don't check for microchip, although obviously they should! I discovered the embroidered collars and have used them for several years. No metal is nice!

We have never used collars in the house for any of our dogs. I don't like the jingle and I like their necks to have a rest. Fortunately we live in the country and our current Basenji is an off leash dog, which has made him so much easier to live with. If he happens to go outside "naked" (due to absent mindedness on my part…...he is not a door darter), I simply call him back and put his collar on. 🙂

  • I just looked and mine are all different! They ALL have a name/address/phone number tag on their daily collars. They are all microchipped but my thinking on that is the same as Kipawa's. Some have their AKC CAR tag..one has their county license and one has an insurance tag. What's missing from their regular collars are on their martingales.

I've been looking at the boomerang tags for a while now and will eventually get them once I find the boys new collars that I like. The tags don't look like they'll fit on the rolled leather collars they have now.

I used to use tag silencers, but they would rip them off each other…..

  • I too have multiple tags on the collars because its easierto locate them if they run off into the bushes. I only put our name on the tags - never the Basenjis' names for security reasons.

Sorry, you lost me on that one. Security reasons?

  • I use Boomerang too. They're black plastic with white lettering. The license is steel.

  • I want to get Watson and Menchi tags from here…mostly because I think it will be fun to have something with a cute tagline on it and the info 🙂

  • I love the Boomerang tags, you can put info on both sides (home address, phone, work phone, cell phone. I have the steel ones that are 9 years old on Nicky and Eddie, still look great. I need to order one for Chipley, thanks for the reminder!

  • Etsy has some nice tags, http://www.etsy.com/category/pets/tag, as well as other stuff for pets.

  • eeeefarm - we are always warned by the police not to put the dog's names on tags as it could help somebody planning to steal them if they can call them by their given names.

Yeah, but we are talking about Basenjis here! :D:D

Seriously, my dog doesn't trust strangers, but would likely respond to "s**thead" if there was food in the offing. (not that he hasn't been called that before) 😉

  • If a person is close enough to read the tag then they are close enough to steal the dog. Changing a dog's name is easy if you know anything about training.

  • Someone once stole or found my Mother's ****er Spaniel. She got word that a guy down the street had the dog. When she went to the house she said "you have my dog". He said "no that's not yours!" They were in the front yard. The dog was in the house and the door was open with the screen door closed. He said "call the dog and we'll see what happens". She calls out "TAFFY!" and the dog came running and slammed into the screen door. He said "OK, OK that must be your dog then" and instantly gave it back.

  • I've had a similar problem with Tesla. She has all three of those tags too and at first I was confused as to what she was getting into. Then after thinking about it, I realized it was her tags so I started taking it off when in the apartment. It took me a couple baths to be able to get the color out. 😛 I'll be interested to hear what other options people suggest

  • I just purchased this tag on etsy. I am very excited for it to come in the mail. So adore and masculine!

I just found some hard plastic tags on Etsy - I can put name/phone number on one side, and rabies info/city license # on the other side. I love the look of the metal tags on your link, but will I have the same problem of discolouration with them? Does aluminum leave discolouration? What about stainless steel? Other types of metals such as sterling silver?
