This is sad. Having had Drew lose an eye to glaucoma, I feel for this dog and family. Removal of the eyes when it is this bad, is the only humane way to treat the pain.

Perhaps donations to the vet direct, in case folks think it is a scam???

  • Might have been a scam… post has been deleted

  • Yes, I see that too, Pat. The post is gone. Sadly, there are people out there who use animals for financial sympathy.

  • There was something about the post that did not make me think it was a scam. I saw it when it was still up. Those who posted weren't explicitly asking for donations, but rather, pleading for help w/ any information for alternatives, or offering their labor for any extra money. They had all of their personal information up. Maybe they got the help they needed, or had second thoughts about publicizing all that information… I certainly hope it wasn't because it's a scam or that they were being harassed.

At any rate, I hope they are able to get the necessary help for their Basenji.

And Linda, is that Drew in your profile picture? I've been wondering for a long time if there was a special story to it!

  • I would not have posted if I beleived it to be a scam. For folks who do worry about such things - one can always let the person know they would be more than willing to donate directly to the vet clinic for care of their pet.

M.C. I too beleive they either got what they needed to help their little girl or they realized they put too much info on craigslist. I am hoping for the former.

As for Drew - yes - that is a picture of him. If you really want to know - email me privately and I can send you a copy of an article I was asked to write for an Aussie pubication re: him.

Benjis Mama, how is your dog? Has he recovered? Did he block again? And have you found any treatments or diet that seemed to help?

@Marie: One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet and which is recommended when treating giardia is to bathe the dog. This is because the giardia cysts can adhere to the hair around the hind end of the dog who then can re-infect himself by grooming. More of a factor in a long haired dog, obviously, but if it were me I'd be giving Oakley a few baths just to be on the safe side. (I'm sure he'll thank me for this suggestion!) Oooooo, I didn't know that! That is a great bit of info!

@khanis: I have NEVER heard of these legendary fleas or mosquitos…. and I am a Portland native... and have NEVER had a flea issue with my basenjis [Whippet, IG, RR, Newfs, or cats]. Our home ranges from 3-6 basenjis on average and still no problem, even with dogs that come/go for showing or boarding. The only time I have treated them [my dogs] was prior to traveling to the midwest or east coasts. During the time I lived in Portland, which is at the very northern end of the Valley and has more wind than the lower Valley, I noticed a lot fewer fleas and 'skeeters. I can understand why you haven't experienced them. Try camping on the shores of Fern Ridge sometime. Make sure you take lots of DEET. I grew up there and, man, the 'skeeters are horrible! I can remember our dogs and cats had a rough time of it, too. We were always picking fleas off them. But that's the difference between living in the city and living in the back woods. The conditions in the lower Valley are perfect for the growth of fleas and mosquitos: standing water everywhere and very few hard freezes. (Gramma lives in the "sticks" too and has lots of both in her area outside Salem.) But, again, back to the subject, she used Brewer's Yeast and had pretty good results with it.

Thanks everyone for your help concerning Seren's torn dew claw. We've just returned from the vet. It wasn't her toe just the nail. Her nail was trimed (pretty deep) and bandaged. She looks so pathetic holding her foot up with the bandage. Hopefully the bandage will stay on at least until tomorrow. A little bit of 'bitter apple' may help. The vet assures me she will be fine. The Basenji Forums folks are the best!

@wizard: While cruising the new posts I came across this one and can't really offer any help (even if I am a biologist). However, I just had to say it made my head spin and my eyes cross :D (I remember now, that's why I had a hard time in genetics class!). haha ya i was like that at first. then i got into it a little more. maybe this other forum can help you, it helped me alot! :) we are actually still going at it! http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=8751&goto=newpost
