Nail trimming

  • should i be trimming my basenji's nails? or do they trim there own nails?& if i should be doing the trimming then how far should i go???!!

  • hi… haven't seen you here for a little while. I hope all is going well with you guys!

Yes, you do need to trim your basenji's nails. They will not bite on their own nails to trim them. Some people use dog nail clippers and other people use a tool called a Dremel.

If you have not trimmed a dog's nails before, it might be worthwhile to have your vet show you how to do it because if you trim them too short you can cut into the area that has blood in it. Many vets will trim nails for free.

  • hi there kipawa, thanks for the message, i'm going to have my vet show me how, it's the best way to do this so i dont hurt him or cause snydamage to his feet!. ya, i havent been on for a while, my dad dies very suddenly!, & his wife is a reall B````! he was going to do a will but didnt get to ti intime , so now she has the sayso of all his stuff!!. but has the nerve to ask me over for dinner this week!!.so thing havent been good here on my side lately!!!. but, hope everything is going great on ur end!.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that your Dad passed away. Please accept my sincere condolences. Losing a parent is very difficult. I hope things can brighten up for you.

Things are going very well on my end. I have my new puppy now. He is just over 4 months old and I love him very much. He is a very good natured dog.

Please take good care of yourself and remember that everyone here is always ready to help when you have any questions about your basenji.

I am very sorry about your father. Sadly, his lack of action gave her control. Nothing you can do about it so why not go have dinner and try to heal that relationship. Being kind to her really will help your own anger. What the AAA says is true, fake it til you make it. Act kind until you feel it. However you feel about her, HE chose to marry her and I suspect would like you to treat her with respect whether she deserves it or not.

Actually, Arwen does and has always chewed her own nails. And Rottweilers with correct feet have nails facing down that will wear without trimming if you have concrete, pea gravel or other surfaces they run on to wear down. Sadly most dogs need trimming and I love my dremel.

This is great advice, DebraDownSouth. Really difficult to do, but in the end, better for everyone involved, especially Pedro.

  • im going to the vegt to see just how far i can do his nails, but i just cant be nice to someone that was never nice to me!! for 23 yrs. but im going to have dinner with her, just hope she dont saay anything negitive about or even compair my dad to anyone!. because i will in no short form go off on her!. but, thks everyone , i really appreciate everything here.

  • Vets rarely use a dremel for nails…. and I hate dog nail clippers... never sharp enough, never easy to use....

    I love my dremel too!!!!

  • i'll have to get one of those for him!!. thks tanza

  • Yesterday I bought a Dremel 7300 (rechargeable smaller one). I used it Kipawa for the first time today, doing his front paws. Tomorrow will be his feet. He did extremely well, but maybe that is because he got a small treat after each nail was done. :) After using the Dremel just once, I don't think I could use anything else.

  • The breeder showed me how to trim Cosmo's nails using a Dremel (though the original reason I have one is for woodworking purposes - but never got to use it on wood :p)…

I put her on my lap and trim her nails every week and smooth them out... She actually likes it and almost falls asleep when doing this but wakes up quickly when we're done because she gets a treat... :D

  • Pedro - good to have you back.

I'm sorry to hear about your father. If his wife criticises try to keep your cool -picture her in your mind in an emabarrassing situation! You will then better her.

Your input is valuable. Thanks, because it's become a religion as soon as you speak against it people get so offended. The last 3 years has shown that quite clearly @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: Another friend's dog has a swollen leg at the vaccination site of his booster which is not resolving I"m sorry to hear about your friend's loss and understand the concern about the other friend's swollen leg. I had a similar experience, one of my dog's (not doodle) had a grossly swollen leg following a vet visit. The Vet told me it was cancer and I opted to let her go. Month's later I read online that it could have been the result of an allergic reaction. Please advise your friend to research possible answers before she makes a decision. Will do, a lot of the medication/vaccines cause inflammatory responses so it could just be that, it's still not nice for the dog to have that experience @Saving said in Bordatella and Canine Influenza Vaccines: dry food ... suffering from malnutrition omgosh! That is so scary!! I doubt the big manufacturers would ever allow a real study to see the light of day, but I would love to see one done. Just the thought makes me want to keep feeding my girl human grade foods. Yeah the same here, her research indicated that raw chicken wings were the optimal food and contain pretty much everything needed. I guess if you think of some of the processed crap they have in supermarkets trading as food for humans you can imagine how low the bar can go for pet food.

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

I was lucky enough that oakleys breeder dremeled so I carried on with it and after routinely doing it he is very good about it. Even at three I still make a big deal after he's done by telling him he's a good boy and give him a cookie. At any point in time he can decide he doesn't want to do it or doesn't like it so I find keeping it positive keeps him on the hook! I also got mine via petedge.com.. I got the grey and blue one; I believe it's actually the Dremel brand
