My girl is spotting

Basenji Talk

  • my girl, Heidi, is 2 years old…..she has went into season in april and september for the last 2 years, and she is now bleeding again.....i am going to have her spayed as soon as it is over....i have never heard of a basenji going in that often.......is she ok.?(her vet has no experience with this breed , and often leaves the roon to look online for answers) >:/
i cant find a vet in my area that has any knowledge....

  • lots of basenjis have two heat cycles per year. If she is acting normally, and the spotting looks like it did with the other heat cycle, she is probably fine. You could contact her breeder as ask if it is common in her lines to have two cycles per year; it does seem to run in lines.

  • But you want to make sure there is nothing else going on, like Pymetra…. anything out of the normal, and this sound out of the normal, should be checked by your Vet. Pymetra is an emerency situation

  • Yes, defintiely..as Pat said, if you are concerned, this is a situation to take to a vet!

  • If she was in heat in Sept and is again, I agree… something sounds wrong.

  • @DebraDownSouth:

Oh, duh…I totally misread the original post. I missed that she had been in heat in September. Yes, definitely TO THE VET!

  • Please take her to the vets to get this checked - surely the vet must know 3 seasons are far from normal for any dog.

Please let us know how you get on.

I think it was really cool that the basenji's were there - at the beginning of the dog story, so to speak.

@lvoss: Have you been counting days since she went in? Also, Walmart has $4 fleece throw blankets that you can use on your furniture for her to lay on as a compromise to britches. If you are really lucky you may be able to find them at Big Lots for as low as $2.50 I'd second what lvoss says about fleece - my pup is in heat as well although we're 10 days further in (Liyah started on the 8th) than you are :D. I found a bolt of fleece in Walmart's remnants section this week - cut 3 throws from it - actually thicker than the pre-made throws. The bolt cost 2.84 - quite a deal!

@basenji3: We watched last night's play closer . The puppy actually lays down and rolls over in submissive posture when he is about to be closed in on. I think he is bowing to their position of leader At least he is submissive and doesn't want to take a stand against them. They still are very rough and nipping on him when he is down but no blood shed. I guess I need to be less protective. He will get alot bigger than them soon, he is their size now. I thought they had already established the pack order, maybe as he gets bigger they are re adjusting it. The interesting thing in my house is that I'm yet to find any scabs on my pup's neck or body from all the rough play, but Ruby and Brando have had some cuts and scabs from Liyah's puppy teeth (fewer now that her bite has become softer from all the adult's corrections). In my case, Liyah doesn't roll on her own accord and doesn't submit unless absolutely pinned by an adult. So that shows me that they are giving her lessons and not hurting her.

@snorky998: The way those little feet can grasp and manipulate things, it's almost as if they do have a psuedo thumb (like pandas).:) Opposable thumbs are often related to species that are considered to have a higher order of thinking. Those of us here that have ever said "How the h*** did the dog(s) do that!!" may secretly think they just hide their thumbs till we're not looking :D. Higher order of thinking? Who knows. Prankster order of thinking? Absolutely!! :D :D :D Toooooooooo funny, and tooooooo true…

How wide is the collar? If it is a narrow one, a wider one might be more gentle on her neck if she pulls alot when you walk.
