Funny girl

Basenji Talk
  • The funniest thing I've ever had my girl do is get into the christmas presents. She was a little horror when she was younger! So we tied a string alarm up in the longue room to protect the christmas tree and presents beneath, and hung bells on the string to let us know if she tried getting into it.

Well, who said basenji's weren't intelligent???!

After the first time we were alerted by the jingle and told her no, she caught onto the way the trap worked and effectively stepped quietly over it.

She is definately not a stupid dog. Defiant, deviant, willful, disobidient and stubborn at her worst yes, stupid – no. She was also a regular escape artist when she was younger too. Although in saying all this, she knows just as many dog tricks as any other dog and will do them more than willingly for a treat.

  • That's funny! They outwit us every time, don't they? Any time Abbey wants something she can't get, she studies the situation calmly, formulates a plan, and in due time carries out her plan. She chewed up my alarm clock (cordless) so I put it on top of the dresser. She waited till I was in the shower, moved the quilt off the chair next to the dresser, climbed up, moved a stack of books and my jewelry box, and got that clock again. One of the funniest stories I've read on this board was about a basenji that went to grandma's house and nobody would give him any dinner so he climbed up on the back of the recliner and launched himself through the air to the table and landed in the middle of the mashed potatoes. Now that's a basenji!

  • Yes, we all have sweet, SMART, babies. I'll tell you that I am amazed at this breed, they are the smartest, and stubborn to the core. Sahara is unrelenting on things she wants, I too had trouble with her a few times with climbing up a stack of boxes next to my dresser to find her on top of my vanity going through my things, and don't even leave a paperback book laying around, it is history if you do. I am thinking of giving Sahara a roll of toilet paper for her birthday on the 31st. haha!!!!!

  • HA HA LOL LOL :D :D that's a great story!

New update: Tika is no longer in heat! Yay! Remy got neutered and is doing great! We got a dog trainer to come in assess the situation and she thinks it is starting to improve compared to how I described it when I booked her to come. Only Maia seems to need the muzzle, she seems to be very unsure of the puppy. We are working with her to build her confidence. The puppy doesn’t seem to have any stress with Maia around and won’t start anything. The muzzle is on just in case when I am home alone as I don’t want anything bad to happen when if I can’t separate them. The puppy is getting lots of training time to help her learn how to behave properly. With 2 people here we can have the girls on short leashes and they are fine together. They did have a small altercation of snarling but no biting and no one got hurt. The older female backed down and walked away. As much as I want her to be the top dog it seems that the puppy has a much more dominant personality. If they figure out the pack hierchy hopefully everything will settle down. The trainer says there are no pack instincts in domesticated dogs, but after having 6 basenjis I can’t agree with that in regards to basenjis. We can walk the girls together without muzzles now so I think things are more positive and they seem to be improving every day. When Remy is healed from his neuter I will get the puppy spayed and hope that calms things down even further. So far there is a lot more peace in the house. Please anyone let me know if there is anything else I should be doing to keep these girls on track. Thank you for all your advice and guidance! I am so grateful for this forum as what is normal for other dogs is not so much with these guys!

I have always wondered why time shares aren't pet friendly…most of us folks have pets and we think of them as family. Speaking of family, when my younger grandchildren come to visit, they do a lot MORE damage than any pet I have ever owned. Wonder why they still accept kids...kidding

@Elysium: That's what I wanted to say :D Happy birthday from Germany, too! Cute, sharing the birthday with your dog ;) Yes, I like to tease Rebecca that is how I can remember her birthday – because it's Jazzy's birthday too. LOL Keoki turns 3 on the 17th. My pups are growing up on me!

@lvoss: Have you been counting days since she went in? Also, Walmart has $4 fleece throw blankets that you can use on your furniture for her to lay on as a compromise to britches. If you are really lucky you may be able to find them at Big Lots for as low as $2.50 I'd second what lvoss says about fleece - my pup is in heat as well although we're 10 days further in (Liyah started on the 8th) than you are :D. I found a bolt of fleece in Walmart's remnants section this week - cut 3 throws from it - actually thicker than the pre-made throws. The bolt cost 2.84 - quite a deal!

Our little girl, Nami, is very vocal. She has a special greeting for us whenever we come home. And if we reach into the treat jar but don't give her the treat in a timely manner, we hear about that too… she scolds us for being too slow. Nami will also "talk" to the other dogs at the bark-park when they won't play with her. Our boy, Radar, is just the opposite. We refer to him as "The strong, silent type." He doesn't say much, but when he does, it is very loud! He usually sounds off when he and his sister are wrestling, then Nami breaks away to hide under the dining room table. He'll stand in the middle of the room and let loose with a resounding "bah-rooooooo."

@tanza: Amen to that Kellie…. and put them in your lap and then show people.. sorry... they do shed.. but that it is not as much as many other breeds... gggg.... And of course, most Basenjis are not "lap dogs" so… when you put this noisy, somewhat shedding dog in their laps they quickly find that it is wiggling and squirming to get down...
