1rst time Basenji owner

    Hi, my name is Bobbi and I live in Norfolk, VA. My husband and I bought a female basenji nine months ago (she was 4 mos. old when we got her), her name is Chloe. I'm so glad to have found this site because we're having lots of problems with her. She chews everything in the house, jumps the gate, gets out of the crate, terrorizes our two cats, our male Rat Terrier and it's become very stressful. I'm hoping to get some help here as the household is under stress.

    Sorry Bobbi, but it sounds like you just adopted a normal happy Basenji. You said that Chloe is just a year old, Our Itty Bitty devoured more shirts and pairs of jeans in her first 2 years than we dare to count. The one thing you can be thankful for is that she will soon be outgrowing all of the things that are causing your stress. We were sure that we were never going to see the end of her bad behavior but we did and now she comes to sit on my knee and sing every time she hears me call her my "sweet baby girl."

    Well, for starters you need to supervise her closely when she is free in the house. How much exercise is she getting? Basenjis need lots, and a tired dog is often a good dog. I assume you have chew toys for her, and you need to make it plain to her what she is allowed to chew and what is off limits. Consistency and vigilance are required with puppies and young dogs, be they Basenjis or any other breed. Bear in mind that Basenjis have a catlike attitude and prefer pleasing themselves, not you. It is necessary to make the wrong things difficult for her and the right things easy. If she is getting out of the crate, perhaps you need a crate of a different design or find an alternative way of securing it. Too much crate time isn't a good thing either. She should be tired when you confine her.

    What is her history? You got her at four months…....from a breeder, or from a previous owner who had already begun to have problems?

    As stated above, she should outgrow much of this behaviour, but I am a firm believer in not allowing the bad things to become a habit. You need a strategy for preventing that. Have you been taking her to training classes or working with her at home? How does she respond to training?

    @karann - The key in my opinion is to visit with Basenjis before you get one... Of course I always recommend that regardless. But for allergies, ask the owners to prepare a small towel that the Basenjis will sleep on for a few days... take that home and put it under your pillow.... will give you a good idea if your allergies will kick up

    Congrats on your puppy…. has he (or his sire/dam) been health tested for Fanconi and PRA with the DNA test? Very important this if this has not been done for his Sire/Dam that you have your boy tested. And even if they have been tested, never hurts to follow up with having him done also.

    Hello fellow long time Basenji friend. They are such a joy to live with aren't they? Do share your longevity secrets:D Is it exercise? Food? Dental care? We had our first two for 15 and 16 years, and decided that more tooth brushing could have helped. We want to keep our newly adopted Leo around a long long time.

    @wizard: I would still recommend an obedience class - not only does it help with your training at home it helps socialize your dog to other dogs and other people. Work especially on the come command because sooner or later your dog will bolt because he sees a squirrel or the door got left open a crack or whatever (nearly everyone here has had this happen) and if the come command is really strong chances are you'll get him back - just a warning to be prepared. "If it does break you'll wish you had fixed it."[/QUOTE Moses has taken off twice over a leaf, and luckily he did run right back when he was commanded to come. My husband has purchased some "dog whisperer" books & videos of some kind and is doing a great job training without frustrating Moses to bad.     Hi everyone, I just found this forum. I have had my 2 basenji's for 3 years coming this dec 29th. They are brother/sister. We are located here in peoria, az. They are a handful especially the male who gets into everything that is not nailed down. We did all the research and new what we were getting into, that why we have 2. A tired basenji is a good banenji. We take them to the "bark park" every weekend. Its their time to meet and greet everyone. Good luck one your pup..take lots of pictures. We have taken ours to Petsmart for the professional pictures every year. It takes about 1 hour until they get the right shot. My male is very active and moves alot. Right now the little girl has valley fever we are trying to get her tiger count down, but next year I want to add to our family, (if the male alowes it). lol:)
