Basenji Owner in Florida

  • I got my first Basenji a little over 2 years ago. My husband was the one that originally fell in love with the breed and while I have to admit, her puppy years were EXTREMELY rough, I to am in love with the breed. Our little girl's name is Tegan and she does have her onery moments, but over all she is AMAZING. She is one of the most loyal, loving animals I have ever had. When she was a puppy, like I said things were rough and she definitely raised a lot of hell. It got to the point where we considered getting rid of her. I am so glad we didn't. So to all you puppy owner's that are struggling, hang in there, there is light at the end of the tunnel!

  • Hi, welcome. Our Breeder said if we survive to 18 months we are doing well, we are nearing the 15month mark and it has so far been easier than I have read it can be, but really believe a lot of it has been putting time into the puppy training, socialising and finding things that work for you and the pup, but that said I know a few little ratbags on the forum who are spirited little darlings who haven't made life easy for their owners but would say those pups found the right owners as they haven't given up on them when others may have and like you will end up with amazing dogs, so there is hope.

  • I own one of those little ratbags..lmao

But I wouldn't give him up for the world..nearing three years and I'm still waiting for the "let up"
    Lol

I'll chime in on the full vet work up and the seizure diary too. Our first Basenji had seizures his entire life - his first was at 6 weeks old. He lived to be 16 years old and was never on medication for the seizures. In fact, our vet told us, "The meds are actually more for the owner than the dog. They don't truly 'stop' the seizures. But the owner feels better." And the side effects of most of the commonly prescribed anti seizure meds can be pretty bad, especially if the dog is on them for a long time. Terry

Adorable face - probably a devil in hiding :p If the biting is clearly play biting a firm NO should work (and see previous comments). If more serious then try bitter apple spray. You definitely want to stop this type before it gets out of hand. Mine (3 yrs old) occasionally will bite (gently and really just a mouthing) when trying to get my attention to play. But you can tell from her expression that she knows she did something unacceptable. Consistent training is the most important thing you could do.
