Christmas gifts for your dog!

    It's my first Christmas with my new girl Kismet (basenji mix) and am trying to find some fun gifts she might like (and won't destroy after one day). After poor Bear dogs toys were all defurred (not the fluffing inside just the longer hair on the outside..) I've decided those are not allowed in the house anymore. But I've found they both love toys that make noises, not just the squeeky kind but actual animal noises or other weird sounds. Kismet also loves big things, she tried to pick a huge lion at the store the other day but it had the fur so was on the no-no list. I was also thinking she might like one of those bones bigger than a dog I've seen. So any recommendations on things that can be purchased online or in a U.S. retail store would be wonderful. Thanks! :)

    Bones from the local butcher are always a nice treat, and will last a good long while. Make sure you get good sized ones so they don't splinter. I've given them to my girls raw before, though some people prefer to cook them.
    I've also gotten big knuckle bones before from the pet store. They are the size of my girls' heads, so they literally last years. Cow hooves last a while, but they are stinky.
    We recently got a stuffed duck as a prize at coursing. It had very little fuzz on the outside, and it makes rattly, squeaky, and also squawky noises.

    Grin, I just assume defuzzing is part of the fun and pick up the fluff. I just shared a video on Nayru's thread in the "Show Off Your Basenji" forum where you can see Batman in the background busily destuffing.

    I ended up getting only a few toys since funds are limited this month and since they charge shipping under a certain amounted went over to amazon for the free shipping/low prices and got the same stuff there. I also am getting a toy for the cat which she'll prolly ignore (but think the dog might end up playing with it with the right incentives…treats and noisey balls).     suki (and i) loooove the sherpa toys. they're fluffy, but can't readily be de-stuffed because they're made of some kind of magic material. i don't know how they're made, but they really do hold up - and they're soft and fuzzy and squeaky! i'm super impressed. i just got mine at petco or petsmart, but here they are online as well http://www.petsolutions.com/storefront/dog/toys/soft-plush-toys/sherpa-go-dog-baby-dragon-dinosaur-dog-toys/prodSherpaGoDogBabyDragonDinosaurDogToys.html.

    i use Ebay to get inexpensive toys that would usually burn a little hole in the pocket.

    I have had a couple stained glass made, but there is normally a 3-4 month lead time as the artists are already booked up for Xmas this yr. Most of the artists on etsy will be booked this late in the yr, I had two quilts and a needle felt made a couple yrs ago and I placed my order in June in order to guarantee Xmas delivery. If you have a nice photo, there is a company called treasure knits that does wonderful woven afghans out of a photo with about a one week turn around. I have had both afghans and pillows made from photos as xmas gifts from them and they do great work.

    Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

    If you ship him underneath in cargo, don't forget there are temperature restrictions. Where would you transfer planes at? This summer has been hot in many cities! Please check the requirements for the airline you will be traveling on. There is usually a limit to the number of dogs allowed on board and in cargo. You will need to make a reservation for him at the time you make your own. There may be additional requirements since you are coming from Canada, you will need to check with the USDA, the CDC and the State of Massachusetts. You can find the requirements on the USDA website and it has links to each state. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/pet_travel/pet_travel.shtml You need to make sure the carrier will fit under the seat so if the carrier you are considering is much larger than the large size Sherpa brand bag I doubt it will fit under the seat. I used to travel with Arnie onboard about 10 years ago before 9/11. I trained him to get in and out of the Sherpa bag and to stay in for short periods of time. He almost always laid down in it. He never made noise even when we were in first class and they served food! Most people did not even know I had a dog. I also made sure I was comfortable carrying him in the bag. I figured if the airline employees thought I was struggling with him then he was too heavy and he would not be let on the plane. He was an older pup but weighed about 18-20 lbs. Jennifer

    Thanks for the advice everyone! Picking them up would have probably worked in this situation because the other dog was small, but i couldn't think that fast as it was happening! but carrying some kind of spray sounds like a good idea, i am going to look for that at the pet store. Thanks again!

    i bought my wife a nice basenji charm several years ago. It was pretty nice. I had to order it as most dog places/stores/gifts (unless at a dog show) do not carry basenji stuff.

    @Vegas: We're all committed to the basenji, because the little tools have a way of capturing our hearts… I think basenji owners are a pretty tight-knit group. The ways basenjis affect our lives are so similar, it's hard to not find something in common with other basenji owners. I think this may be the "same page" Andrea was speaking of!
