Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I had a rescue girl that had intestinal surgery and on the last day she was definitely getting better as she was trying to get to the leash that was hanging outside the kennel.

  • I'd never ever leave any of my dogs in an unsupervised kennel overnight. In fact I'm sure if my vets had this rule they'd make an exception of Basenjis!!. They are always grateful when I collect my Basenjis after an operation just for peace and quiet!!
Being serious I think this is a dangerous rule. Wwould you bring your dog home after an operation and go away for the night? If the answer is no (and I assume it is) why would you leave her/him alone in a strange place with a strange collar on and so apparently trapped!

  • when Ebby was spayed, we dropped her in at 8am and picked her up at 4pm. the OH dropped her off with her blankie and toy as i had to go to work and in my morning tea break called them to check in on her, the OH must have warned them i would as they were expecting my call. They even called me after she came out of surgery to let me know she was recovering well.

When Hope dislocated her hip, it was of course at 11pm and we rushed her to the emergency vet clinic. they took her in and sedated her & gave her pain meds and done all their procedures while another vet nurse was dealing with me and paperwork for Hope. Once done i would have happily slept in the waiting room but was ordered off home. They were brilliant and rang me straight after her procedure. Within 4 hours from her hip being put back in place they asked me to come in. Naturally she had to stay quiet for the next 3wks with minimal movement (omg and she was like 10mths old)… they OFFERED to keep her in (crated and sedated) for a few days (at my expense of course) but i happily declined as of course we had crate trained her (i was ever so thankful i did!). They said any issues to bring her back in, she came out (back leg was in a sling) just as lively as she usually is and gave me the floppy side ear look like you left me mum. The staff were quiet smitten with her actually. That night me being a paranoid mummy thought her sling was just not quiet right (slipping and naturally, she hated it), took her back and they decided since she is crate trained and happy to stay in the crate that they could take the sling off provided she stayed on strict bed rest. Then we just had a free check up with my proper vet to make sure it was all healing nicely.

I chose my vet because it wasnt a large commercial vet, but a small qualified vet that my breeder also goes to. So they kinda get Basenjis :)

I wouldnt leave my basenjis overnight at a vet unsupervised full stop. My friend picked up a paralisis tick and was at his local vet during the day but needed to stay overnight and was transfered to an overnight clinic which have vets there. there is no need for unsupervised stays

  • Maca is not well welcome at the vet, she was there for one day, and the vet was so happy that i was pick up her the same day hahaha she destroyed a cage… they were there because Maca bites Laika and Laika had to stay there several days until i get fixed the garden door, But she was sad and quiet.

I dont want to repeat that.. poor girls...

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

well, we made an adjustment. i bought one of the inflatable collars today. i'm not totally impressed because i'm sure if she were determined, she could still get at those stitches. fortunately, she doesn't seem like she wants to work that hard. so, i will let her wear that while i am with her so she can chew on toys comfortably, smell properly at restroom times, not run into walls, etc. when she's in her crate, i'm going to put the e-collar back on since i can't supervise. better safe than sorry. i'm still contemplating about bedtime…. she sleeps with me, so she's quasi-supervised, but i'm sleeping, so not entirely. we'll see....

Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

Zaire was tired for the first day that I brought her home. After that she seemed pretty unaffected by her surgery. It was (I think) much more traumatic for me than for her, as I was soo worried for the next week that she needed to slow down. In the end all went well, with the exception that she healed MUCH QUICKER than my vet initially thought, and I ended up having to take her in 3 days early to take out the stitches as they were tightening on her scar and cutting into the skin. As soon as they took them out her swelling on the scar went down within a day and looked Amazing as far as healing. I I didn't notice much of a difference in energy level or eating and drinking after the first day home. As for Behavior she seemed the same to me. I do think she went into a false heat earlier this month/late august and for about 3 weeks was a DEMON to her brother and the min-pin. _Yelling and screaming at them all day). But that's my princess, she will not take guff from any male. :D

I brought her to the vet on Monday and that's when she said to put a hot compress on the site. The incision looks normal and healing very well. No redness at all. The swelling is probably like the size of an almond. I noticed it because she's always had a very lean and flat tummy (don't we all wish we could be like that lol). I thought it was unhealthy too to have fluid accumulate under the skin, but the vet said it happens. I will keep an eye on it, and they said to call them on Friday with an update. Hopefully it will go away soon. In the mean time she really likes snuggling up with the heat pad.

@tanza: Well, I have to say that the fact that she way spayed early IMO has nothing to so with her being higher in the rear then the front.. Many Basenjis grow that way… and besides, she is a mix.. so I don't think you can really determine that... While she might have grown differently... again IMO I don't think that was the cause... or if it is maybe a little... However, I totally agree that her leaking urine is most likely due to the early spay... also (and I am NOT saying that this was true in her case or the Vets they used) but I have seen way to many bad spay/neuter jobs from the so called "low" cost clinics.... they treat them like an assembly line and in my opinion I have seen way to many problems coming from these places... For me, thanks, I will spend the money to make sure it is done right... Obviously things happen, but I 3 spayed bitches in the house ages 13, almost 15 and 16+, never have they have a problem with "leaking" due to them being spayed.... Granted they were done at 3 and 5yrs old... but again, from these so called low cost clinics, I have seen many a dog with problems. I agree with Pat here. I think the high in the rear is most likely attributed to her being half something else ;) But the dribbling…yes, probably due to a less than perfect spay...or early spay...BUT there are medications that you can give her to help with that.
