  • I have been reading these forums for quite a while, and I thought it was about time I joined and said hello to everyone.

In the past 7 months I've adopted these two Basenjis:

The youngest is Roxy, a 7 year old red and white female that I adopted from an animal shelter on Orcas Island, while the tricolour is an 11 year old boy named Rocky that came to me from Battle Creek, MI, via BRAT.

Both of them are settling in nicely, getting on well with the resident cats, and are enjoying sunbathing outside, now that the sun has hit western Washington.

  • Welcome, and bless you for adopting wonderful older dogs. 7 & 11 are wonderful ages, my youngest is almost 11, I still think of him as a youngster.

they look like they are getting used to each other quite nicely, I'm sure you are enjoying them!

  • Welcome to the forum. Roxy and Rocky look like wonderful Basenjis!

  • They are so cute, entwined in each other's limbs. Welcome.

  • love the photos! glad you found us…

I think that Rocky is 11 going on 3 years old. We went on a trip to the beach yesterday and he had a great time exploring the driftwood at the base of the cliffs. He was way more active than Roxy, but then again she's the very definition of 'couch potato'.

  • what a sweet pic!!! i can't believe they haven't been together thier whole lives. bless you for taking in some almost senior pups. glad you posted!

  • Wow, I'm amazed you found a basenji on Orcas Island. It's so small.

I'm glad you found them both. They look happy.

  • I love the older b's..they are just treasures…

  • @Nemo:

If it wasn't for Sharron, I'd probably have missed her. Sharron came over to evaluate my house for a potential BRAT adoption, and when that didn't work out, I kept looking. When I saw an email from her about a basenji at the Orcas Island Animal Shelter, I went the next day and brought her home the week after.

    @agilebasenji:

i can't believe they haven't been together thier whole lives.

They have their moments together, they have been some squabbles about 'who gets to sit next to me' from time to time. We're working on that.

  • Thank you so much for taking that b out of the shelter. Anytime a basenji smart home does that, I consider it a win!!!

  • Welcome to you and your Basenjis. How fortunate for them and you that you've given them a loving home.

  • Welcome to the forum, Roxy and Rocky look great together. Look foward to hearing more about them both.

  • Congratulations on being adopted by two wonderful looking beasties - I mean basenjis!
And welcome to the forum (you lurker you :))

I look forward to your pictures. I'm a technophobe too - I keep telling myself I can do it but so far haven't posted any. One of my bitches was spoiled for the show ring by such a judge who didn't know how to approach a hound (although he was a Saluki judge and should have!). She was experienced at showing as well but was traumatised because when she backed away at his front on, silly voice approach she nearly fell from the table! Of course she blamed the fall on his approach. I worked on her intensively but to no avail. Yes, Basenjis on the whole are friendly and they never forget a friend either!

Bungwa has a very dry mouth and I only managed to get a very tiny white patch on the test card but it was still sufficient to do the test with that. It only turns white when it's dry - the instructions are quite explicit. Of course as Pat says it could be a bad test form.

Welcome and kudos to you for helping with rescues! It sounds like Kowboy was a great introuction to the breed. I'm sorry for your loss of him and Indy. this is a great place to share and keep memories alive. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a speedy relocation back to your family in CA!
