Have you talked to her breeder? Seems a bit light, but it all depends on how she is built, but at only 15", that is to the small side also. If she is healthy and eating well, then she is most likely OK. But best to always talk to the breeder and learn about their bloodlines and what is typical for their Basenjis.

  • Is she looking/doing ok?

  • she's very healthy, energizer bunny hahah, I'm just guessing on height/weight, I'll try to get more accurate tonight. Can't talk to breeder she's a rescue dog-abandoned with her brother at 2 weeks. My daughter has had her since 5 weeks was bottle fed by the people that found her. They couldn't keep them because their pit bulls were being too rough. I'll post some pics later tonght.:)

  • OK, I'm a little off, she's 15 in. (not quite sure how to measure) and weighs 20 lbs. I'm trying to upload pics, do I have to use a website or can I upload straight to this website?:)

  • ok posted some pics!!!! on Show off your dog.

You would measure from the ground to the withers, which is a place just were the neck joins the back and you can feel the shoulder blades.

  • I wouldn't worry that much when they are so young. They will usually start tightening up once they pass 1 year.

Gizmo was/is a heavy and big guy. I too was worried with his weight, but now at 11 months, his body has started to tighten up.

  • Our Dolce is also 7 months old and is about the same size and a little lighter at 15lbs. She is not a good eater, but was always the smallest in the litter.

  • Our rescue now adopted Kell was 16.01 when we got him at 4 mos, now at 6 mos he is 29 lbs!!! But he is taller than all our other Bs, he is so active there is very little fat on him. He was on the thin side when he first got here and ate almost constantly for 2 weeks. Now he gets a small breakfast and a normal supper with the rest of the pack. We bred our own Bs in years past, and they do tend to tighten up after a year. As a pup, I am not going to put him on a "diet" at this time. As long as she is healthy, eats well, I do not think I would worry about it. Our 5 year old girl only recently went over 20 lbs, and we changed their dog food and all the adults have lost weight and look and feel much better I do believe. Enjoy!

[URL removed] I used this when my boy was a baby and if he was underweight I would increase his food and if he was on the right track I would keep the same amount. It’s good to have a look at the dogs behind your pup to see how the dogs in his lines turned out full grown if they was compact, slim etc. I feed raw and used this guide FOR DOGS An adult dog needs around 2 – 3 % of their total body weight each day. To maintain your dog's weight 2.5% and to fatten up a skinny dog 3%. For a porky pooch it is recommended to reduce to 2% to help slim. Puppies may need up to need up to 8 - 10 % of their bodyweight to aid growth.

@sammm Basenjis are a long and winding road. My first was a challenge at first as I had no idea that a Basenji was different from a “normal” dog lol. After the first year, I found myself looking for information on the internet to find out why he was so different. At one point I seriously wondered if maybe he was just crazy or something. I was very surprised to find out he was actually just doing normal Basenji things and that they are all like that lol. As with most things, when they are challenging and hard work, the final rewards are greater and more cherished. This year is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a great achievement that was not easy, required a lot of hardship and work, along with some luck. But because of those things, the achievement was greater and more rewarding. Those who endure the difficulties and bond with their dogs, would in the end never change a thing. They are very rewarding, over time you will get back more fun, laughs, education, love and affection than you can put in. The day comes all too soon when you will wish they were howling all night in the kitchen because they wanted to be with you or chewing the $20 bills from you wallet because they were bored. Enjoy the moment, that is the Basenji way.

Just be aware that every line and each individual are different and that you really need to keep your eyes and hands on your puppy/dog to judge whether they are at a good weight and adjust accordingly. Basenjis naturally gain most of their height by 6-8 months usually only gaining another inch or so after that. They tend to be slower to fill out sometimes taking 2-3 years to reach full maturity. The percentage of HD in the breed is just over 3% and in basenjis the most important risk factor is family inheritance. The best way to predict your puppy's risk is to have vertical pedigree data.
