3 month old Basenji scratches at her collar a lot?

Basenji Talk
  • Is it OK for a 3 month old B to constantly scratch at her first collar ever after having it for about 2 days? Also, she tries to chew on her leather leash once in a while.

  • If she never had one on before then it's probably awkward for her and she's trying to get the strange thing off. It will bet better with time. A lot of dogs chew their leads.. she's a puppy and these things are new for her.

  • Very common to scratch. Usuually the breeder will begin to put collars on pups at 3 to 4 weeks to get the used to it…. can take weeks. Chewing leashes is certain common for babies....

@sammm Basenjis are a long and winding road. My first was a challenge at first as I had no idea that a Basenji was different from a “normal” dog lol. After the first year, I found myself looking for information on the internet to find out why he was so different. At one point I seriously wondered if maybe he was just crazy or something. I was very surprised to find out he was actually just doing normal Basenji things and that they are all like that lol. As with most things, when they are challenging and hard work, the final rewards are greater and more cherished. This year is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a great achievement that was not easy, required a lot of hardship and work, along with some luck. But because of those things, the achievement was greater and more rewarding. Those who endure the difficulties and bond with their dogs, would in the end never change a thing. They are very rewarding, over time you will get back more fun, laughs, education, love and affection than you can put in. The day comes all too soon when you will wish they were howling all night in the kitchen because they wanted to be with you or chewing the $20 bills from you wallet because they were bored. Enjoy the moment, that is the Basenji way.

These are really things you should be talking to the breeder about….. And if the sire was an import, could be as already noted just take time for the ears to stay up, or they might never.... same with the tail... Note also, it is not uncommon when they start to loose the baby teeth that the ears don't stand up....

I can relate. Mine's vacationing at her grandma's for the second time this summer. I'd say the house is too quiet without her but come to think of it it's quiet when she IS here! Don't sleep too good though–-there's a little empty spot behind my knees....

Is this Nick Russell of MastersPride? If so, we have a leather collar that does not slip down the neck and works well with them pulling. I put it high on the neck and Talker and Savannah will stop. But these collars that you posted the pixs looks really nice. Do you have the website?
