Considering adopting a 3 year old Brindle

    The Fanconi DNA test is not 100%. There is always a small chance that results may get mixed up with another dog or that the dog may have an anomoly that makes it difficult to read. Other than that, the results seem to be pretty accurate. The probability of a carrier developing Fanconi is very, very low. I would not be stressed about it but if you decide it isn't something that you are willing to risk I would recommend adopting a dog who has multiple generations of "clears" behind it.

    I'm seriously considering buying a Basenji that both parents are probable carriers of Fanconi by DNA. I went through the nightmare of watching my first Basenji succumb to Fanconis early in 2004. This dog was bred by a very reputable breeder and the same goes for the Sire/Dam. What do you guys think the chances are that this one will come down with the Disease?     As noted the test is a linkage tests and there have been errors in a few of the results. But a Carrier should not develop Fanconi. That said you should still stripe test monthly for life.

    One question, was this Basenji born in 2008? Which would have been over a year after the DNA Linkage test was available? If so, were the sire and dam not tested before breeding? It doesn't seem that if responsible that a breeder would have bred a Carrier to a Carrier if they would have known?

    I responded to this on your other thread (btw, please don't post the same thing in multiple threads). Unless this is a puppy, the breeders are not "responsible" even if well known, to have bred 2 carriers and risked puppies having Fanconi on purpose. Please find a responsible bred dog.

    Is the dog itself tested or the breeder just ASSUMES it is probable carrier since the parents are? Why risk the tests being wrong when you have so much better chance when at least one parent is probable clear?

    He is closer to 4 years old. His parents were bred in 2007 before the test was availible. He has been DNA tested as probable carrier

    Then go with your heart. If both parents are probable carriers and he is too, the test is fairly accurate barring testing mistakes. I'd feel pretty confident about it, but if I had a choice, I have to be honest and say I'd look for a clear/carrier to up the odds. That's just me–have had such massive health issues and vet expenses the last 4 yrs I am simply gun shy.

    Thanks so much for the friendly advice, we had a chance to spend some time with him this weekend and he has a wonderful personality and disposition. It turns out he has been tested twice and both times the result was the same (probable carrier). We decided to take him, and we'll get him at the end of August after he gets "fixed". we are very excited and can't wait to bring him home. Thanks again to everyone, your advice has really helped! I'll post some photos next month

    Thank you all for your opinions/suggestions. I will consider what i want to do going forward. If i just accept the fact that i will be using walkers/doggy daycare on an everyday basis that does open up the available options of dog breeds to me as well. Traits like 'independent' might become less important relative to 'train ability' or 'people pleasing' since the issue of time by themselves would be largely negated I think? So perhaps i should go do some more research. If I were to get a puppy vs. an older dog I would obviously treat that situation drastically different. I have plenty of family/friends help I could get in the area along with professional services as needed and also have plenty of vacation time to burn. That, even if it lasts for a year, I still view as something temporary vs. a permanent lifestyle change.

    Very common to scratch. Usuually the breeder will begin to put collars on pups at 3 to 4 weeks to get the used to it…. can take weeks. Chewing leashes is certain common for babies....

    I have notices with my guy it very much depends how the small dog acts around him. If the little one is confident and relaxed Watson treats them like any other dog and will play. If they are snarky and unsure he can become a little intense and I will step in and redirect him. He is always carefully supervised when we go to the dog park…the main place where he encounters other dogs... He enjoys playing with other dogs and is pretty social. I am careful not to allow him to meet other dogs while he is on leash since he is a bit leash reactive.

    People go blonde or red or black with their hair for a 'change'. Libby just wanted to see what it was like to be a Brindle! Mr. Baroo, that is too funny about your r/w trying to flea-bite the stripes off of Buddy. He must think he is trying to clean the black fur out of him!

    It depends very much on the cat & the dog & your setup. I have a cat who never could adjust to the dogs. She was terrified of them. Every time she came around, they got excited because they wanted to sniff her & play with her, which freaked her out. Her instinct was to run & hide, and of course when she ran, they chased her, which freaked her out more. Even after nearly 3 years, she just couldn't adapt to them. My current cat, Spooky, stands her ground. She rarely runs from them, and if they get to be too much, she uses her claws & teeth to tell them so (every dog under her domain has been to the vet for a scratched eye once and only once each haha). She has been known to instigate wrestling matches with the dogs. But she is a much more outgoing, friendly, trusting cat than my previous cat. Both cats were exposed to the dogs as young puppies, and I make sure I'm around to supervise interactions in case they do get too rough. Basenjis do have a high prey drive, but generally speaking, if the cat can stand its ground, and you are there to supervise & introduce them to one another slowly, it could work out. Good luck!

The dachshund on the other hand devoured it, only to realize too late what he had done, then he had this horrified look on his face..as if he had eaten poison or something..hilarious in my eyes, not so much in Gus' eyes..Otis and Luna thought he was insane for eating the fish..it was even cleaned and filead (sorry about spelling, having a blond, foreign moment and can't think of it..), but nope not edible in their mind..
