Hmmm. And who has the puppy just now? Poor thing, passed about from pillar to post and it's just a baby still.

  • How sad… It's a lovely pup, I hope she finds her forever home soon!

  • She's beautiful, i do hope she finds a good forever home with people who understand Basenjis.

  • Poor wee mite! No wonder most good basenji breeders are so thorough when they vet potential owners. I hope she finds a really good home soon.

  • Things can always go wrong with rehoming pups and sometimes they cant stay in their new homes, we had one lab puppy who had to come back to us when the owner broke her back - very sad situation for everyone concerned… But hopefully if the breeder of this baby didnt know their pup is being sold on they will read this thread and contact the owners to take it back.

  • I wonder what has happened to the littermate that she also has/had!!

  • It's awful when things don't work out. Lets hope this little girl finds a great home soon.

Unfortunately, the breeder (the link above) placed two puppies with her - I consider this was totally irrreponsible and taking advantage of a not very knowledgeable but kind person. I'll contact somebody who helped the breeder in the past and see if I can find out more.

If Katty reads this, perhaps she would like to get in touch with Basenji Rescue they may have a home for this puppy - in any case they would take over the responsibility.

  • :( I sure hope this sweet puppy finds a good home.

Ahh, i know who the owner is now. I remember the discussions about many peoples concerns of her taking on littermates.. Lets hope that was not the reason for this little one being rehomed.

  • From the ad that was posted, it is not the littermate that is the issue it is the basenji female she had gotten the year before that is having an issue having a second basenji female in the house. This is a frequent issue in basenjis and one reason why so many people on this list caution against same sex placements especially with inexperienced owners.

Exactly… and you need to be careful when you bring a puppy into a house that has an adult... regardless of age... but the older they are, sometimes the harder it is to introduce them... and many are not made totally aware of the adult and the "training" that they will do with the puppy ... Many take this as they will never get along... not always the case... and you can never totally prepare anyone for the noises that can come from the adult to a baby puppy....

  • aww adorable! wish i was in the UK, hope the pup finds a home she can settle into.

  • that really is so sad - 11 weeks old and already looking for a new home. the breeder should be ashamed of themselves for (a) placing 2 pups in the same home on a "spur of the moment" purchase and (b) for presumably not following up the placement and taking the wee girl back. Lets hope she finds a good home soon.

  • Do we know yet whether the breeder will take the puppy back?

I totally agree with Ivoss and Tanza and this a two puppy placement not just one!!

  • oh man thats just up the road from me i wish i had a spare 400…. i would love to take her on such ashame

does anyone know whats happened to this lil pup????

@kianakenney Congratulations on your new pup! Nala is a cutie! It’d be interested to know her genetic make-up......I don’t have any guesses. Enjoy her - she is precious.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.
