Hi from Cincinnati!

  • Hi everyone!
I'm really excited to join a community of fellow Basenji lovers! My Basenji, Pippin is a 3 year old female. She is a mix, but I'm not sure with what. Pippin has all the main features of a basenji, but weighs about 35 pounds and barks.

Here's the story of how I got Pippin. It was in 2008. I was engaged and convinced my future in-laws to get me a dog for my birthday. The dog would be living with them until my fiance and I moved into our house. Their condition was, it had to be a rescue since there are too many unwanted dogs and everyone (the parents, me, my fiance, and his older sister) must agree on the dog. We went to PetSmart on their shelter days to check out what puppies they had there. I walked down the line of crates and I immediately fell in love. She was a small 10 month old red and white dog curled up in a ball as tightly as she could. Her ears where pinned back to her head. I could tell she was scared, so I sat next to her crate while everyone looked at the other dogs. I wasn't even remotely interested in looking at another dog. But I had to get everyone to agree. While I was bonding with the dog I wanted, my future sister in law, was in love with a small skiddish beagle/lab mix. I tried to talk her on to my side, but it wasn't happening. Neither of us would budge. So the in-laws decided to get both dogs!

I had no idea what a Basenji was until I took Pippin to obedience class and the trainer identified her. The shelter told us Pippin was a Jack Russell/Shepard mix! Once I started reading about Basenjis everything made so much sense!

I'm married now, and Pippin lives with me, my husband, a mini-goldendoodle we rescued named Chewbacca, and a cat, also a rescue, named Bella. (Our friends call us the Brangelina of the animal world. We can't help but to rescue animals… or at least I can't. My husband just goes along with it :p)

This is Pippin the day I brought her home.

She was so excited to graduate obedience training :p

Oh, I can see why you fell in love. She's a real cutie! Looks like she has a lot of personality, especially in that last picture.

What an adorable little dog..so cute. What a face.. Welcome to all of you.

  • Thanks everyone!

  • Hi !
I've just visited this forum. Happy to get acquainted with you. Thanks.

  • Beautiful little face - so clearly Basenji with her wrinkles and expression. B mixes are as a rule really nice little dogs - I have one B and a B/Collie mix - the mix is just as much a joy to have as the full B, and a little less intense, i.e., she actually comes when she's called.:p

What a sweet face! Thank you for taking her in, she needs a forever home. As Pat indicated, unless you have info on the parents being clear, or at least one clear, she should be tested for Fanconi asap.

A tired Basenji?!!! Joking apart, I agree with the previous posts. It is really important that she doesn't get something for nothing as Wizard advises make her work for it. Welcome to the Forum to you,Teagan and the others.
