  • It is best to have any non-breeding animals fixed.

  • The only studies I have seen about lifespan and being intact were done on mice and showed that neutered mice lived longer than intact mice.

Once the growth plates are closed which Pedro's would be there is no reason why to keep him intact. As has been stated before the reduced testerone levels will greatly reduce the chance of fights at the dog park even those initiated by other dogs.

  • that i have fou nd to not be true!! the one dalmation and the doberman where fixed and both charged at little man!!. so i guess it depends on the dog it self on that one.

  • you know i might just get 2 more pup's and have them all fixed!!.. i thanks that might be a great idea!!.

  • @pedro:

that i have fou nd to not be true!! the one dalmation and the doberman where fixed and both charged at little man!!. so i guess it depends on the dog it self on that one.

Actually, it was probably the fact that your dog is intact and smells of testosterone that contributes to these incidents. One reason that many dog parks do not allow intact dogs is that even if they are not aggressively seeking fights they tend to be at the center of many dog park fights.

  • i didn't even thank of the smell of testosterone!! dau!! i really feel stupid now!. they have sutch a hight smell too !! i would love to be able to have there eyes, smell.and hearing! it would be great to have!. it could have been!! the guy said he never seen his dog do that before too!!.

  • Pat and Lisa, you 2 need an award. I got tired just reading this. If Pedro is listening, you have the best advice you will every have. Please, quit posting and re read all the stuff sent to you…then re read it again.
ALL you need has been sent.
You just need to "get it".
*this isn't a slam" I am also suspecting there is some mis communication here.
But please, if your a troll, leave us be, we are trying to help people.

  • Oh dear… I am exhausted already. Kudos to everyone who has been so patient. Pedro, I am new to this breed and am finding that reading up on the breed is the best way to start. That and being on this forum and being POLITE. The people you are asking questions to here are not trying to put either you or your dog down. I hope you understand that. Just try to be calm and slowly read what they are saying. And what about going to some dog shows where there are basenjis? I am hoping to meet some breeders this weekend at a dog show. I want the breeders to get to know me, and I want to get to know them and their dogs. There is so much involved in eventually becoming the owner of a well balanced family pet. There is even more to think of if you decide to breed dogs.

  • Hi kipawa,

  • hi Pedro, I am sorry that your dog was called 'trash'. All living animals and beings have a right to happiness and a good, healthy life. I myself don't like the idea of feeding table scraps to dogs. A good quality dog food has the properly balanced ingredients to provide a dog with proper nutrition. Us humans don't always eat properly, but at least we can feed our animals well, right? :) I don't think the odd 'treat' off of your plate is a problem, but just make sure you know what human food is and isn't safe for a dog to eat. Here is a link that talks about problem 'human' foods. http://www.articlesbase.com/pets-articles/toxic-foods-for-dogs-191994.html I would think that there would be other foods as well. Just as some people have specific food allergies, individual dogs can have them to foods other dogs eat safely.

  • thanks kipawa, i will look through this . i didn't thank dog'scould get allergies to people foor!.but i have heard of dogs being allergic to corn. thanks.

  • PEDRO. we all do want to help you. It seems sometimes we are saying the same things over and over. Sorry if I offended you. Just tired and these post just seem to be too much. Go to the BCOA site and find out who does b's in your area. Go to some dog shows. YOU will have to find them. Then it will be easier to explain.

  • Many people on this Forum feed "raw" and only use people food. I use both, fresh meat, veggies, (and the meat is usually raw or lightly cooked)… but I use a high quality dog food too.. one that is all natural...

You can find shows and other activities close to you, but you need to do the research.

And why would you want a Basenji that is not AKC registered? If that is the case, consider a rescue www.basenjirescue.org… and if you think too expensive, then save your money till you can afford a well bred puppy from a responsible breeder

  • thanks guys! i will do this on these sites'you gave me. and if you can?, tanza can u give me some of ur recipes?. thanks for helping sooo much. it has come in handy. i have one more quesrion for you's all could there be anythank wrong with my basenji, because he hasnt'goon pee all day and he has done this a few times since i got him!!. but when i take him out and tell him to go pee he go's right then!>

That "baby" on the couch is my 15+ yr old…..LOL.. that is my old wonderful girl... so always remember, while she is a Dual Champion (show conformation and Lure coursing Champion) she was never bred because there were health concerns... but she was and still is our "pet", loved family companion...

  • what!!!!!! 25+ yrs old. she looks like a puppy there!.

  • oops i meant 15+.

  • Congrats! Happy to hear it! Hope all is the same for my girl. Getting her testing in probably 2 weeks -HOPEFULLY. Mom is clear, father is carrier. I hope she is clear!
    Anyways CONGRATS! :)

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

@Kipawa: Good results! :) And kudos to you for starting strip testing next year. Kipawa will either be clear or carrier. I'm going to send away for the test soon. You hope. Please remember the test is linkage, not clear genetic. While your chances are VERY good for clear or carrier, keep in mind that isn't 100 percent sure.

@lukris: That's good news about Chance Vicky. At least you know you have to find a nice clear boy for Nakura now. You must be relieved. Chance is Nakura's son so can't use him! The search continues. We need to encourage more people to test are there are only about 6 clear stud dogs in UK at moment. So not much too choose from there!!

As long as his CPP registration got entered before they received the blood sample, you'll hear eventually. If there was a delay in the registration, the blood results won't be posted and you'll have to call Liz.

@YodelDogs: Was this litter bred before or after the DNA test was made available? Before. Pups from that litter are now adult dogs.
