My first B started challenging at 16 months, we neutered him shortly after and it did seem to help a little. However it was only a small part of the solution not the whole solution. The closest thing to a magic solution is the excercise and mental stimulation. Basenjis are one of the most intelligent dogs and need more excercise and stimulation than most. I have generally found males to be much easier to work with and less aggressive than females. Correct discipline, structure, positive reinforcement, patience / stubbornness and enough excercise are the keys. Usually when people have problems with their dogs it is the humans which are the cause, not the dogs.

@Mowgli: We will be bringing home our first B (hopefully thats the right way to say Basenji in the forum) on Saturday morning. She is 1 yr old and she was just surrendered at a no kill shelter here in Wisconsin. We dont have any other dogs but fell in love (cautiously after browsing the forums) with Chloe (soon to be Mowgli, fingers crossed). I have found some amazing help already from a lady associated with the Southwestern Wisconsin Basenji Club, but am always looking for more advise. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks all. I think we will see (chat) a lot with each other. I saw her on petfinder through another thread. She is a very good looking girl. Make it a point to give her treats whenever you catch her being good. My dogs get lots of treats! They learn quickly behaving is fun.

That was probably when they were giving people the opportunity to help with Bella's medical costs to have her severely broken leg fixed. I certainly appreciate all those who did including my daughter. Hmmmm, wonder if that was why she kept nudging me to meet Bella. She has a pin in her back leg but you could never tell it.

As others have said - thank you for recognizing the qualities of the 'mature' dog. Best of luck to you and your new companions.
