This morning's walk

Basenji Talk

  • Covered by our warm coats, Kipawa and I set out for a good walk today. I was grinning from ear to ear as we walked, Kipawa heeling really well. Every now and then a small correction was needed - a very light movement on the chain coupled with a type of clucking sound from me did the trick.

We stopped at each corner. Kipawa sat and we checked out for traffic, which is very minimal here, but a good thing to do nevertheless. I was heading to a park I know of, but I didn't know they had beautifully enclosed tennis courts - chain link fences about 30 inches tall with the bottom right in the cement.

Oh, I felt like a dumb dog owner. I hadn't brought a ball or even a few treats. Of course I was armed with my doggy poop bags though. I ran around the court and Kipawa zoomed along with me. We did this for awhile and I then decided we should leave and head home. But…

... what's that on the grass? A baseball? Oh yay! So I picked it up and back onto the tennis court we went. Now here is where the major excitement came. I tossed the ball. Kipawa went running after it... and brought it back to me and dropped it at my feet! :) I said to him "you fetch"? So I thought "yea, I'll try it again, but I will probably have to go get it". Tossed the ball again and Kipawa zooms to get it and brings it back again. :) We did this for a good five minutes. I was astounded.

Walking back home I realized I had a huge cheshire cat grin on my face. Then once in the house it was treat time for Kipawa. I have to get better organized for our walks now - need my camera, treats and the baseball that we wound up keeping, because I believe we were just meant to find it.

  • LOL! Maxx was never a "fetcher." Oh, he'd run after whatever was thrown…the first time...but he'd just sniff whatever it was. His attitude was always, "You threw it, if you want it back, go get it!"

I would have loved to see Kipawa fetcing!

  • Houston

How funny..jepp pictures needed next time.

  • yay! suki's a major fetch-dog, too, and i never expected it! but that's her favorite game and we play non-stop every night. lucky for me, it doesn't require me getting up off the sofa!

  • LOL…of course...Kipawa fetches too!! I just have to laugh as he sounds like the basenji lots of folks want - but few rarely get! :D

That said...my boy Brando fetches - I could throw the ball for an hour and he'd willingly bring it back - he loves it. Ruby will fetch too, but only after she watches all the attention Brando gets from fetching and then she joins in to get some of the attention. After a couple of minutes she is done with it though - as in, what's so great about that game.

My other 2 - not interested...they'll chase the ball but never bring it back. More like, you want the ball...you go get it.

  • My Chinese Herrman chase it, take it och run away from mig hahah :D

Remember the camera next time, we want pics :)

  • I will definitely bring the camera. I'm getting a newer camera that records in high def - need to get all the great moments!

  • I want a camera that can make videos to.
I only have my mobil but it make the worst videos.

    Im jealous of you ;)

Do you have any 'points' programs where you are? Like getting points for using a credit card? That is how I am getting the camera. But only use a credit card when you know you can pay the monthly bill off, otherwise credit card companies will rob you in interest.

  • Kipawa sounds like a perfect little dog! I can just imagine you walking with this cute wrinkly pup with a big smile on your face :)

I just hope you get your new cam soon and start bringing it with you on walks ;) :p

  • I never heard of that kind of card in sweden.
I don't even think i get at creditcard because I only have a substitute work at the moment :) I need to get me a better job haha :D

  • What a well trained boy Kipawa is, I can visualise your smile!!

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

No problems, lets me learn for future reference which is always a good thing :) Kaia is still petite. I haven't weighed her in about 2 weeks or so, she had been hovering just a smidge under 18 lbs, she may have finally gone over that now. That's why I was hoping to put off until July, wanted to make sure she had plenty of time to grow because we weren't too sure if she grows slowly or if she'll just stay petite. But I look back on her first pictures with us and wonder when she got so big!

I'm afraid If I do decide to get another I won't have a chance to introduce them beforehand as it Will probably be a puppy I bring from the US.. I doubt there will be a problem since she will be a young puppy…

There's no animal so resourceful as a hungry basenji. They were slighted you know for centuries being last in line at the cooking pot.
