Which mixer ?

Basenji Feeding
  • Can anyone reccomend a good mixer biscuit to put with raw and tinned food.

  • I use Laughing Dog for Maya. She's very fussy about dry food and has a habit of picking the meat out of it, but if i soak this in warm water she eats it quite happily.

The company we get the meat from deliver it for us so it makes life a lot easier too! :D

  • Yes, I use Laughing Dog Mixer too. Actually Bakers took over the company but have kept it much as it was.

From other's reliable recommendation, Dene's mixer is very good too.

  • Ok, I give. English to English translation please. :D What the heck is a "mixer"? I looked up the brand but still couldn't figure out exactly what it is.

Hi Nemo, a mixer is a biscuit mix to put with meat.

  • Thanks Jess and Helena,
will get her some, i have been giving her complete mix biscuits on ocasions with her meat and feel it's probably too much protein ?

  • Shelley - yes, In my opinion giving Malaika a complete food as a mixer could result in her having too high a protein intake but obviously wouldn't have hurt on such a limited basis as I note you say that it is only on occasions.

Laughing Dog had a very good reputation and used to be recommended for dogs with behavioural problems but wasn't one of the big companies. However, they branched out into the complete food business but couldn't compete with the giants and had to close! I was nearly distraught but happily others have continued to produce the same formula.

    Probably information overload, sorry!

Not sure how Xylitol is being marketed. It is an alcohol found in a lot of plants, including birch wood, which is the source of Xylitol used in medicines. And it is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Most of the time you find it in sugarless gum and candy. Here is an FDA warning "Paws Off Xylitol": https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs

Thank you everybody so much! I appreciate all the info. I had some vanilla Breyer's all natural and gave my guy a taste of that... boy does he seem to think that's a great treat! Obviously, though I don't want that to be the only thing I do. I'm going to follow up with our vet on getting a draw for the full thyroid panel at hemopet once next pay check comes through. You were right he was only checked for T4. Thank again basenji forums! I was looking back at pics from when he was younger and weighed more. I think he's always been a bit taller than standard and had a little barrel chest. Used to call him a basenji bouncer at the dog park. He was all about playing with the labs, pits and other big dogs - probably because he knew he could outrun them if they ever got too rough. He's much more about slow walks with me and lap snuggles these days ❤

I know this topic is old, but I give my B freeze dried salmon bites as treats. I usually find them in the cat section
