    She is a smart girl…and it was totally my fault, but I worry because she is just such a vaccume. Lou, dropped a coffee bean, unground, on the floor, and before he could get it, she ate it. That was a week ago, but she is just awful when it comes to anything in the kitchen.
    I think our only way to keep her safe is squirt her out of "harms" way.

    Oh Sharron, sorry, but that made me laugh. I can see your three pouncing on all the scattering food and you just wondering what to do! Good idea about the spritzing - very good for dogs that do not like water. It sounds as if Wheat has found a wonderful home. Now go to your kitchen and double lock everything! :)

    Sharron, start doing some It's Yer Choice with Wheat every day. Though she will probably always do some scrounging this really does help with the impulse control and leave it.

    Sharron I had a similar incident like that with Sonny aka Hoover Vac a few weeks ago…my brother was moving & my parents house was a mess of boxes and things while we were there visiting...usually Sonny is right under foot where all the peolpe are but everyone knows when its quiet & he's no where to be found that equals- TROUBLE :eek:......we of course found him in the spare room with a bag of dog food he'd pulled out of a box all over the floor & he was going to town! :rolleyes: I have no doubt he would have wolfed down that whole bag if we didn't catch him....as my father says he's got a little Italian in him & likes to eat like the rest of the family! :p:p

    Sharron that is hilarious..although I can see why you don't think so.

    Moses, our portuguese podengo wonder boy, also knows how to unlatch the airtight lid on my dogfood tub, so I constantly find him head first into it eating like he has never seen food before..silly dog.

    I had to laugh but it was very close to home because Tifi ( at nearly 7) has started the trick of climbing up on to any surface where there's food and devouring it (1lb of meat today!) She doesn't share though - do you think Miss Wheat was trying to do the others a good turn as well!? I too use the water squirter but so many call me cruel for that!

    Its is funny! if it happened to someone else..laugh. You have to laugh..once you make sure they are going explode because of food issues!!!

    Fran, she really looks the same. She is almost 10 months old, and hasn't changed at all.
    But when I get Lou to get the camera out, I will share with you…
    I love these dogs...they are just so smart...keeps you on your toes!

    Google Gazehounds in TX. They do straight and oval racing in the Mckinney, TX area. We come down occasionally for their NOTRA meets. They are having an oval race this weekend if you would like to atttend and watch I can send you directions. We will not be there this time as I'm having surgery Monday and need to take a couple weeks off. Where in TX is Pearland? We do lure coursing in Hutto, Waller and Cat Springs, but the season is at and end now. Will pick up again at the end of Sept which would be a good time for your girl to try some practice runs. There are lots of nice non basenji people in the clubs who will help you train her. Get a good recall on her now, puppy training classes would help for that.

    @Basenjimamma: Otis' favorite household machinery is by far the dishwasher…joy to the world, when it is open and the dishes are still dirty...yumm-o!! Dishwasher a favorite for every B I've ever had. One time I had a guest here and he had taken a shower earlier using a towel he brought. Ringo pulled his damp towel off the rack, hauled it in the living room and right in front of the guy proceeded to roll around on it until it was a twisted mess. I was embarrassed to say the least. He didn't care. :D

    In our house there is one way to get back inside… Now before you say thats unfair, we don't have a yard so human and basenji have to stand out in the rain until Indy does what he needs to do. It will only take one or two times to make the point. Plus no potty in the house

    I agree i´ve used those methods on all my dog´s(long before Cesar came along) not only the basenji and never has a dog questioned my leadership.But I always praise and i´ve never used force never had the need for it so there i´m different.These methods are common methods with working dog´s I used to have a Boxer and i´ve just adjusted certain parts of it to fit the Basenji ;) Many of the dog´s in that show are just left to "run wild" no training or excercise and instead lot´s of silly things with people who humanize their dog´s.And they looked surprised if they need to take walks jeez I take mine out 4-5 times a day and two of the walks are 6 miles and he he plays with other dog´s every single day to keep him socialized as he´s growing into adulthood.I also show train him every day not more then 10-15 minutes just to keep it fresh in his mind. What people tend to forget obedience training is something that you have to keep doing continuously as their memory is not like ours so you have to keep it fresh in the mind. I probably stated the obvious but I do agree with Jazzys mum:)

    Cairo at first ate from 8-2pm every day….little amounts, lots of pee and poop. He is 12 weeks old today and he eats 1 cup of dry food every evening at 5:30pm. He poops once in the morning before work, and right after eating, and once about an hour later. Diet makes a big difference in the amount they poop and their coat and general health. I fed Caesar Eukanuba Premium Performance for years before Beta came down with her irritable bowel disease. Most of the basenji owners I know feed their dogs Innova dry food. Extremely healthy and you have to buy it at a feed store. I use Natural Balance Duck and Potato dry or wet for my guys. It is a no preservative, no soy, no wheat, no rice, and no corn product that is made for sensitive dogs. It is a complete diet from puppy to adult. I swear by it, super stuff!! Cairo is eating as much food as Caesar. I keep Caesar very lean and healthy. 1 cup is all they need with an occasional treat. You are right though. there is a point where they start gobbling food and then they can hold more and eat once or twice a day. they are funny after they eat! little round bellys!
