  • Been reading this site for a few months now while my family has been investigating bringing a dog to join our home. Research led us to an interest in basenjis, which culminated last week in a visit with a local breeder and his pack. Now we're hooked!

We are looking for an adult basenji or a mix with strong b characteristics. We hit up petfinder.com and BRAT several times a day, and have just recently started contacting breeders looking for available adults.

This site has been an enormous help even as non-owners, I can't imagine how useful it will be when we add a basenji to the family!

  • Welcome to the Forum, who's Basenjis did you meet?

  • Congrats on doing your research!!! You really need that attitude with this breed, especially when looking for a responsible breeder or adoption agency. Welcome to the forum and we can't wait to see picks of your new friend when she/he arrives!! =)

Welcome to the Forum, who's Basenjis did you meet?

Met with Kyle C. and the Kaleonahe pack. Seeing basenjis in person is worth a thousand internet posts.

  • Welcome to the forum - you seem to have taken a very good route to get your basenji. I hope you find your forever addition to your family soon.

  • Glad your doing your homework…we are all here to help you.

Congrats on your puppy…. has he (or his sire/dam) been health tested for Fanconi and PRA with the DNA test? Very important this if this has not been done for his Sire/Dam that you have your boy tested. And even if they have been tested, never hurts to follow up with having him done also.

She sounds very basenji to me - all her antics are things my Shaye does. Also, the look in her eye where she is laying on her side, and the position, are very familiar. I believe that look is "what?… Get out of my face, I'm trying to sleep here!"

Those muttlucks look wonderful! There are lots of good websites that will show jackets and fleeces for your B. I wouldn't think feeding needs to change when it gets really cold unless he spends lots of time outdoors - some basenjis actually love the snow, so they say, although mine would not. Once the plows come through and you have running or walking room, his exercise doesn't have to suffer either. I lived in Vermont for a few years and our dogs (not basenjis then) managed just fine, both the longhaired ones and the sleek great dane. Basenjis have a lot less body weight, though, so a good warm fleece or fleece lined jacket would be in order. It gets real obvious when they're cold - they stop moving, shiver a lot, and try to get picked up! Of course mine does that at 55 degrees.

Ok now comes the story about Missy. Missy would destroy things around the house, get into the garbage, chew on socks and underwear. Mom would punish her , tell her she was bad, and Missy would go pout. Mom would have to leave her bedroom door shut for a week or Missy would go in and pee on Mom's side of the bed, but never Dad's side. who was punishing who?:p
