HELP! 8 AKC Basenji Pups in Young County Shelter

Basenji Rescue
  • If someone from BRAT in the North Texas area sees this please PM me with a contact number.

A backyard breeder has turned 8 puppies over to the Young County Humane Society. The pups were born December 14th, 2009., have AKC paperwork and have had 2 rounds of shots. 5 males and 3 females, a mixture of Tri's and Red/Whites.

I am an ex-director with the shelter and told them I would attempt to get BRAT involved.

  • Not that it is probably significant, but were the pups born in Dec. '09 or Jan or Feb '10?

  • Ooops. I corrected my original post. It's been a long day, and a Monday to boot. ;)

  • Please go to www.basenjirescue.org and post this to them.

  • Hi Craigh,

I am the BRAT Regional Coordinator for all of Central Time Zone which means if they are in TX I am the person who will assign them to a local coordinator. You may write to me personally at elizabethanewton@hotmail.com

We will certainly try to help!

    Liz Newton

  • Thanks Liz,
    email sent.

  • The shelter is currently out of puppy food, and I've offered to feed these pups until they can be rescued.

I can't afford a premium food for 8 pups for an unknown period of time. I've always fed my dogs Taste of the Wild. Can anyone recommend a decent quality puppy food available at somewhere like Tractor Supply that won't send me to the poor house?

  • Ms. Sharron, would you consider taking donations from some of us to help with the puppy food for these guys? I would be willing to donate so they can have high quality food. I'll also send you and email about this.

  • The local feed store has Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul. About $24 for an 18lb bag. Tractor Supply has Taste of the Wild. I think either of these would be far and above anything these pups have ever eaten.

In a situation such as this, any food is acceptable IMO… And I would be willing to donate food to the shelter. If I can purchase from the local store over the phone and then you can take it to the shelter?

You can contact me privately, email is on my website

  • Pat,

Thanks so much for the offer. I just took 70lbs of 4Health puppy food (grainless) to the shelter, with instructions to call me if they needed more. If we need more and I cannot get local donors I may give you a call. The pups should be getting wormed and a second round of shots this week. We had thought they'd had 2 rounds of shots but found out later only one.

Still waiting to hear from someone at BRAT. Shelter said they hadn't heard from anyone yet.

Here are a couple pics. The pups seem well socialized.

  • What adorable pups. In my heart I know they will go to good homes. In the meantime, where can I mail a donation to? I'd do a U.S. money order because I am up here in Canada. Let me know who to make the donation payable to.

  • A couple more pics:

  • Craig- The shelter has been contacted and I have posted info on how donations can be made. Could you modify your last post? BRAT will be picking up these pups Thursday or Friday.

    thanks!

  • Melissa,
Thanks so much for getting involved. If I can be of any help PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me.

  • For BrendaTXBrat - The address listed is in Tennessee. Is there a better address than that listed on the form to get the funds to you a.s.a.p.? Also, I will be sending a money order as I am from Canada. We have to indicate who the money order is payable to. What is the best name to put down? Thanks so much for your assistance.

  • I hope this BYB has had their dogs spayed and neutered after this fiasco. This sort of thing just infuriates me.

  • Working on getting the BYB to turn their dogs over to BRAT as well. Should know something in the next couple of days.

@senjisilly said in Basenji in Kern County, California: @tanza Doubt that he is a purebred. Hope the links to his other photos help you figure him out. I had a nice long chat with a woman at the shelter who thought he likely escaped his adoptive home and that the owners might not want him back. So far none of his adoptive homes were Basenji experienced. The tail. Have to agree. Still, could have a nice Basenji attitude. :oncoming_fist::beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The thing with multi-generational mutts is that they tend toward the dog "default" which is the same look that you see in many street dogs and pariah dog, medium size, prick ears, and often tan coloring. Since basenjis are a primitive dog they share these characteristics.
