I need help naming my new basenji pup!!

  • @Kipawa:

Miss P, do be mad at yourself, but do it in a way that will allow you to grow and realize how serious breeding is. Those puppies are probably long gone - and we hope things turned out well for them. Spend your energy now taking a good long look at how you want to proceed with the information and training you will need to be a breeder that provides only enough healthy pups that she can place into the proper homes. Then you will never have to go through the pain you are feeling now again.

I know I cant be mad at myself but I am. I should have known better, even if i didnt. I wish I had researched ALOT more (like i have in the last 7 years) about breeding instead of just jumping into it. I was just so excited to get to keep a puppy from the litter that I forgot what was important in breeding. The puppies. but ya, after I heard about the puppies, i took a long "thinking period" and i decided that IF i ever breed again, im going to do it responsibly. I always planned on spay and neutering but now ill have all the contracts and paperwork necessary for the safety of my puppies. I have the spay and neuter for my rescue and the spay and neuter contracts too, but I started that only in 2008. but for the basenjis, Ill offer money back for a successful spay and neuter, i'll have Spay and Neuter Contracts, Adoption Contracts, A Bill of Sales, and if necessary, a Transportation Agreement. Ill have the genetics tested and all other tests needed. Ill get them microchipped so I can feel al little better that if they end up in the shelter, I dont have to worry. I have a question. Would it be bad to just microchip them and not tell the owner and then if they ever ended up in a shelter the company would contact me?–I want to know if that would be absolutely horrible. Has anyone ever done that? Or maybe tell the owner but just not transfer the chip? OR is it possible that IF they transfer the chip, I require myself to be a key contact so that if they cant get ahold of the owner, they can get ahold of me? Just curious and trying to get more options. feel helpless that I have no idea where my babies went...

I will make sure the puppies new owners are screened properly and i wont sell them for so cheap next time. Ill have a screening process (which reminds me, does anyone have an idea of how to do a good screening process. What questions to ask, things to do, etc.) Like i said, i wont be breeding anytime soon. I want to learn even more about this now. I made a huge mistake and i feel horrible about it but I am going to make sure I dont do that again and if i ever breed again, that Ill be sure to do it right.

If anyone has any ideas on what I can do. How to do things right/better if i do ever decide to breed and any other paperwork I need/everything else id love to hear it. 🙂

Thanks for all the comments and help.

Even if she got them all back, she will never be able to fix it because it is not just them anymore. How many Missy grandpuppies are in petstores and rescue because of Benji Boy J? How many others may be there through her other offspring?

She should take responsibility for the dogs she produced but she will not be able to "fix it".

You are right. But I hope she helps by spreading the word, but telling others what happened because of breeding. Perhaps even use this to inspire herself to get into rescue help instead of breeding, or make sure she spends a few years learning pedigrees and genetics and health and learns to do it utterly right should she breed again.

Missy, I also know how hard it is to track a dog. I had one who was neutered so not issue of puppies… but husband and wife getting divorce and I offered to find the dog a home if it was a problem. He moved, she gave dog away and refused to say where. He was a police officer and couldn't find the dog, not a happy situation. I just hope he was put in a good home. She hated him, not the dog, so I hope just taking him soothed her spite. It has been 13 years and I still wonder if he died of old age (Rottie) in the arms of someone who loved him.

As for chips, you need to tell them because it's a bad way to start lying. They may also go to have a chip and then the dog have 2. Register the chips to yourself and the owner both but with YOU the only one who can change it. They then have to contact you to get their address changed on the info. I have found most the time routine calls to chat and check on pups builds a relationship where they know you are fine and won't beat up if you have to take a dog back.

  • I was absolutely horrified to read this post. Are dogs often sold at livestock auctions? In this country we have auctions for trained sheep dogs which usually fetch hundreds and hundreds of pounds (sometimes into the thousands)because a well trained dog is invaluable to a sheep farmer. However I've not heard of other breeds being sold in such a way.

  • In the United States, in some states, there are dog auctions. The majority of the auctions are held in the states with the most commercial breeders-USDA licensed breeders. The auctioneer must be USDA-United States Dept. of Argiculture licensed. Almost all of the sellers are USDA licensed. These are the breeders/dealers who sell to the petstores.

The auction houses that regularly hold auctions are located in MO and OH. Many times the auctions are held at the breeders residence because they are having a kennel liquidation or a major reduction in the number of dogs. The two big ones in MO are SW Kennel Auction in Wheatland and Heartland Sales in Cabool. SW has one every week from September-December and February-early June. Heartland has one about every month. There is one in OH that is in the Amish area called Farmerstown Sales Auction or Buckeye Sales Auction. This one is secretive and I have never seen a website for it.

Normally only dogs are sold at these auctions although twice there have been cats sold.

Here is a webpage about the OH Dog Auction where a TV crew went. There is a video for Part I and pictures of some of the dogs that were rescued in Part II. I have only been to this location twice. It used to be held at another location and I was there once.

I am rescueing, www.foreverfriendsrescue.webs.com I have been rescueing since 2008. I already stated I was going to wait a few years had i decided to do so, I am learning and researching pedigrees and stuff. I am looking into it and I have contacted some beeders to get more information. I am not just jumping into it. I am researching and REALLY looking into things. Im not even sure im going to breed but if i do, um definately gonna do it right this time if i do. I am going to start showing and getting to know Basenji people before I decide if i want to continue to pursue breeding. But I AM rescueing already, so i just wanted you to know

My name is Whitney, Missy is my dogs name 🙂 Im not sure if u meant that or if you were talking to my dog. :p hehe I am sorry to hear that. Its sad not to know, you can only wish and hope and pray they were happy when they passed but you never will know (unless you happn to meet someone or the owner and ask them)

Ya i agree, I didnt actually think i wasgoing to not tell them . That is a GREAT idea! Thank you! I never thought of that nor thought it was possible. How do i go about making me the contact owner thingy. The person that they have to contact? I am going to do that with all my dogs, rescues and IF i do breed. That is a brilliant idea, you are so smart! And ya i try to build relationships but some people just dont want to be friends, they just want a companion. Which im sure ill probably just not sell dogs to them.

  • LOL Whitney, I looked at MISS and added a "y" 🙂

  • :D@DebraDownSouth:

LOL its ok 😃 hehe I have done it too

  • The reason I asked about Missy's eyes is that my Bambi and Missy have the same sire and Bambi has a cataract that is considered juvenile and produced a son with with major eye problems whose sire is Missy's son.

The cataract is considered juvenile because she was diganosed with it before she was five years old. Since I do not know her history it is unknown if she was born with it or when exactly it developed.

  • So wait, let me get this straight. Missys sister was bred to missys son and they produced a litter of puppies. And one of the puppies had bad eyes? That is just sad and stupid breeding 😞 poooooor dogs! uhg this makes me more and more mad about these puppies!!

And thank you for your concern. I dont think Missy has any problems. She was checked out by the vet about a few weeks ago and he gave her the all clear. She doesnt show any signs of it. But i guess im not sure. She doesnt show her age at all tho, she looks like shes maybe 4 or 5, and she is nearly 11! It doesnt seem to bother her, if it should happen to start bothering her, ill have it checked out by an eye doctor but for now i think she is ok. Thank you for the word of warning. 🙂

  • If you do not have an vet opthalmologist in your city or within driving distance, sometimes a CERF eye clinic will held at a show. The eye exam is similar to a human's as the vet will dilate the eyes.

    Jennifer

  • Check with local breed clubs too … I am taking my gals to a Britney Spaniel breeder's house in Jan.. she has clinic once a year and it is as cheap as at the dog shows. 🙂

Ill have to do that. thank you for the info

o really? ill have to look into that to. I think there is a show about an hour from here the end of october. so maybe ill have both my girls tested. 🙂

  • Dr. Tracy Leonard, a B breeder and vet holds a CERF eye and tatoo clinic every year at her office and it is held on a Saturday, usually in January. This is in Dayton, OH. The closest vet opthalmologists are in Columbus and Cincinnati.

I would also check with your vet and see who he/she refers to when it comes to eye problems.

There is a calendar of clinics, not just eye, on the ofa website at www.offa.org under Upcoming Health Clinics. This is the same website where one checks for Fanconi and other health test results. I doubt all clinics are posted there though.

  • Thank you for this information. ill have to look into it. 🙂 Appreciate the help

Another thing to keep in mind that for the clinics at shows and breed club clinics, you usually have to have a reservation (with paperwork & money) done well in advance - otherwise you won't get a space.

For instance…I just had my 4 basenjis done at a CERF clinic at a Golden Retriever breeder's house. I made my reservation (and sent my check @ $40ea - $160) 1.5 months in advance of the clinic.

Also, I don't know...if your dog ISN'T AKC registered if you can bring your dog to a clinic at an AKC show. Usually only AKC registered dogs are allowed at AKC shows...

  • thank you for the tips. Missy is NOT AKCso maybe ill have to make a special thing for her. Im not sure where to go but ill try and figure something out. My other girl is AKC so ill have to get her checked. Im going to try to make reservations for her for this coming show. Does anyone know what age you can get the eyes checked?

  • Any time after about 8 weeks old.

Huh? Gosh been to many dog shows, not once did they ask me to show my dog's AKC papers. Even when I took dogs that were not SHOWING. The only time I have ever heard of restrictions is at benched shows, which are few and far between.

  • Ok perfect. and ok thank you debra. ill just try to take her anyways and see if i cant get it done. if not then i suppose ill just look around for a different place for her 🙂

  • Call them to ask and register. 🙂
