I need help naming my new basenji pup!!

  • @DebraDownSouth:

    You are right. But I hope she helps by spreading the word, but telling others what happened because of breeding. Perhaps even use this to inspire herself to get into rescue help instead of breeding, or make sure she spends a few years learning pedigrees and genetics and health and learns to do it utterly right should she breed again.

    I am rescueing, www.foreverfriendsrescue.webs.com I have been rescueing since 2008. I already stated I was going to wait a few years had i decided to do so, I am learning and researching pedigrees and stuff. I am looking into it and I have contacted some beeders to get more information. I am not just jumping into it. I am researching and REALLY looking into things. Im not even sure im going to breed but if i do, um definately gonna do it right this time if i do. I am going to start showing and getting to know Basenji people before I decide if i want to continue to pursue breeding. But I AM rescueing already, so i just wanted you to know

    @DebraDownSouth:

    Missy, I also know how hard it is to track a dog. I had one who was neutered so not issue of puppies… but husband and wife getting divorce and I offered to find the dog a home if it was a problem. He moved, she gave dog away and refused to say where. He was a police officer and couldn't find the dog, not a happy situation. I just hope he was put in a good home. She hated him, not the dog, so I hope just taking him soothed her spite. It has been 13 years and I still wonder if he died of old age (Rottie) in the arms of someone who loved him.

    My name is Whitney, Missy is my dogs name πŸ™‚ Im not sure if u meant that or if you were talking to my dog. :p hehe I am sorry to hear that. Its sad not to know, you can only wish and hope and pray they were happy when they passed but you never will know (unless you happn to meet someone or the owner and ask them)

    @DebraDownSouth:

    As for chips, you need to tell them because it's a bad way to start lying. They may also go to have a chip and then the dog have 2. Register the chips to yourself and the owner both but with YOU the only one who can change it. They then have to contact you to get their address changed on the info. I have found most the time routine calls to chat and check on pups builds a relationship where they know you are fine and won't beat up if you have to take a dog back.

    Ya i agree, I didnt actually think i wasgoing to not tell them . That is a GREAT idea! Thank you! I never thought of that nor thought it was possible. How do i go about making me the contact owner thingy. The person that they have to contact? I am going to do that with all my dogs, rescues and IF i do breed. That is a brilliant idea, you are so smart! And ya i try to build relationships but some people just dont want to be friends, they just want a companion. Which im sure ill probably just not sell dogs to them.

  • LOL Whitney, I looked at MISS and added a "y" πŸ™‚

    LOL its ok πŸ˜ƒ hehe I have done it too

  • The reason I asked about Missy's eyes is that my Bambi and Missy have the same sire and Bambi has a cataract that is considered juvenile and produced a son with with major eye problems whose sire is Missy's son.

    The cataract is considered juvenile because she was diganosed with it before she was five years old. Since I do not know her history it is unknown if she was born with it or when exactly it developed.

  • So wait, let me get this straight. Missys sister was bred to missys son and they produced a litter of puppies. And one of the puppies had bad eyes? That is just sad and stupid breeding 😞 poooooor dogs! uhg this makes me more and more mad about these puppies!!

    And thank you for your concern. I dont think Missy has any problems. She was checked out by the vet about a few weeks ago and he gave her the all clear. She doesnt show any signs of it. But i guess im not sure. She doesnt show her age at all tho, she looks like shes maybe 4 or 5, and she is nearly 11! It doesnt seem to bother her, if it should happen to start bothering her, ill have it checked out by an eye doctor but for now i think she is ok. Thank you for the word of warning. πŸ™‚

  • If you do not have an vet opthalmologist in your city or within driving distance, sometimes a CERF eye clinic will held at a show. The eye exam is similar to a human's as the vet will dilate the eyes.

  • Check with local breed clubs too … I am taking my gals to a Britney Spaniel breeder's house in Jan.. she has clinic once a year and it is as cheap as at the dog shows. πŸ™‚

    o really? ill have to look into that to. I think there is a show about an hour from here the end of october. so maybe ill have both my girls tested. πŸ™‚

  • Dr. Tracy Leonard, a B breeder and vet holds a CERF eye and tatoo clinic every year at her office and it is held on a Saturday, usually in January. This is in Dayton, OH. The closest vet opthalmologists are in Columbus and Cincinnati.

    I would also check with your vet and see who he/she refers to when it comes to eye problems.

    There is a calendar of clinics, not just eye, on the ofa website at www.offa.org under Upcoming Health Clinics. This is the same website where one checks for Fanconi and other health test results. I doubt all clinics are posted there though.

  • Thank you for this information. ill have to look into it. πŸ™‚ Appreciate the help

    Another thing to keep in mind that for the clinics at shows and breed club clinics, you usually have to have a reservation (with paperwork & money) done well in advance - otherwise you won't get a space.

    For instance…I just had my 4 basenjis done at a CERF clinic at a Golden Retriever breeder's house. I made my reservation (and sent my check @ $40ea - $160) 1.5 months in advance of the clinic.

    Also, I don't know...if your dog ISN'T AKC registered if you can bring your dog to a clinic at an AKC show. Usually only AKC registered dogs are allowed at AKC shows...

  • thank you for the tips. Missy is NOT AKCso maybe ill have to make a special thing for her. Im not sure where to go but ill try and figure something out. My other girl is AKC so ill have to get her checked. Im going to try to make reservations for her for this coming show. Does anyone know what age you can get the eyes checked?

  • Any time after about 8 weeks old.

    Huh? Gosh been to many dog shows, not once did they ask me to show my dog's AKC papers. Even when I took dogs that were not SHOWING. The only time I have ever heard of restrictions is at benched shows, which are few and far between.

  • Ok perfect. and ok thank you debra. ill just try to take her anyways and see if i cant get it done. if not then i suppose ill just look around for a different place for her πŸ™‚

  • Call them to ask and register. πŸ™‚

    Call them to ask and register. πŸ™‚

    Ill look that up now and see if i cant get ahold of them πŸ™‚ Thank you so much for the help:)

  • didnt mean to post twice

  • I did take a non AKC registered dog to an AKC show to get an eye exam done several years ago. He got along with other dogs and was up-to-date on vaccines. All I did was walk him from the car to the exam area and back again. This was at the Muncie Kennel Club show where the Hoosier Basenji Club Specialty is held.

    Jennifer

  • thank you. i will do that πŸ™‚

    Is anyone going to the South Dakota dog Show? put on by Sioux Empire Kennel Club in Sioux falls, SD? Its October 29-31! Just curious!
