Food grade Diatomaceous earth

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Anybody use this to naturally control fleas? In my Google searches people have been having luck with it. You just have to use precautions not breath it or get the dust in your eyes.

  • i've used it for ants; we don't have fleas here. don't know if what i have is food grade; it came from the feed store. it's pretty safe for mammals and birds.

  • I use it a lot..in my chicken coop, it keeps all bugs off of the hens and rooster. It also works for dogs, but tend to be very drying on the skin, for humans and dogs. It works though.
Yes, use extra caution for both of you and Buddy, not to get it into your lunges, like I said it is very drying and will irritate your lungs.
Make sure you get human grade/food grade, like at a feedstore, the other one is very toxic, that type is for pool use.

So the dogs have not have flea problems using this?

  • If B-mamma is able to control fleas in Texas with this stuff, it must be good. The first time I took AJ to Texas, we stopped outside B-mamma's town so he could take a leak. He no sooner got out of the truck and had fleas just covering his legs and feet. I got my tail to a pet store as soon as I could and got him some Advantage.

Guess that nice hot climate is what they like.

  • Yes, we could control it with the diam. earth, but rather not, their skin gets so dry, I only use it in my yard and coop, spread it all over your yard, on a nonwindy day and it will kill anything and everything, inlcuding fleas, it basically dries them out. I even put it in the feed for the chickens, helps with worms. Although unknown to most, we all consume diam. earth as humans, in pancake mixes, some flour mixes and things like that..keeps critters from invadiing while in storage..
I actually use Comfortis on the dogs, the only thing that seesm to work the best.

Oakley was on the Iams intestinal sensitivity formula because I tried taste of the wild ( of all kinds) and he was still having stool issues, combined with a puppy bout of giardia…he did well on it but I didn't feel good about the ingredients. From there I tried nature variety and he wasn't a fan. He has been sensative stool wise with many of the high quality foods so now we use Fromms and he is terrific. He loves all the varieties ( I mix two kinds at a time..one of their grain free versions with a grain version in order to get a reduced grain diet; stool issues if none or too much!) His weight is steady and his coat has never looked shinier, smoother of softer. Lastly, he loves the taste and I don't have to coax him to eat. I agree with not free feeding OR feeding from the same bowl. Since yours have issues (whether it's weight or sensitivity) knowing when they ate and controlling how much will allow you to better navigate around the health issues and possibly identify the cause of some as well!

Interesting. If anyone else tries this, I would love to get some feedback. As I understand it, food sensitivities are hard to diagnose accurately. There's skin allergy testing, where a panel of fur is shaved off and different allergens are tested directly on the dog, which I was told often registers false positives. And there's something like VARL Liquid Gold Serum allergy testing, which still requires a blood draw. I guess they can test for food allergies as well, but again, I don't know how accurate that is. So I've been told that the best way to test for food allergies is still to try an elimination diet. It would be wonderful if there was a rigorous set of tests that could just tell you definitively what food your dog is allergic to! So if this test does it… cool. I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thanks for sharing, Pat.

i have no recepies, i make my own dog food most of the time as well and it is quite easy: cooked rice or cooked noodles ( I prefer noodles as that has more energy for my dogs ) then you add raw beef , mince, chicken, liver, kidneys , lamb whatever kind of meat, or fish ! and if you wish you can also add some mashed veggies and/ or herbs. By the way I only give noodles in the winter when they can use a bit more energy / fat. otherwise I mainly feed them raw and also bones and fresh tripe etc. But I guess that is not what you meant ;)
