    We are drawing up a list of words to use when training Malaika, so the whole family are saying the same thing.
    I could do with some clarification between the use of the words No and Leave it.

    I use 'Leave it' when trying to teach food manners. This can be really useful when out walking when you come across a dead something or a chip wrapper etc. The word 'No' is used in my house when one B maybe growls at another in jealousy, or tries to mount my arm or just something they're not supposed to be doing.

    Hope this makes sense.

    One thing I have found is that there are no hard and fast rules. But you have the right idea by getting everyone in the house using the same commands. I have one of my puppies where everyone in the house has a clicker and each are trained how to use it on the pup.

    Thanks Victoria, we just want to get it right.
    Just worked out it's abour 18 years since i had a Puppy.
    If she gets a bit much for the Cats, i'm saying No, then reinforcing with leave it.
    She's doing brilliantly realy, just working on her being happy with us at the moment.

    Why don't you enrol her in puppy classes? The trainers will be able to help you with commands and all the family should be able to attend too. :)

    We are definately going to take her to a Puppy training class, haven't managed to find one yet, two people have said they would contact me with numbers and haven't done.
    She is the first Dog me and Howard have chosen together so it will be fun.

    I also have a Verizon air card USB - the video may use it all up. Also, instead of using the laptop with the air card, I used my home computer to call it up and found you have to subscribe to something in order to watch - it's my policy not to do that. So, even though the video may be great, you do have to sign up with something to do so.

    @Forever: Zoe on the other hand has turned into a little witch. As was suggested I think she is protective of chief. She even turned on Lizzy when she came over the first few minutes than they were fine. But all her previous doggy friends get snarled at when chief gets near them. I hope she settles soon. She has one old dog who looks forward to seeing her on his walks flinching around her now. When Liyah was a baby - if Brando started to go off on her, Ruby would put herself in between Liyah & Brando. Ruby was very protective of Liyah when Liyah was a pup. Ruby doesn't interfere as much anymore - once in a while she gets involved - she pretty much just lets Brando handle it now.

    Just curious - have you tested the drug yet? How is it working? I take it you can read norwegian as you live her. If you want to, I can email you som info I got after a session with Gry L?berg regarding my Giants seperation anxiety, it has a training program in it, and some general info.

    Edward, Positive reinforcement methods like clicker training work wonderfully with basenjis. All four of my basenjis are clicker trained. I guess you could even consider Sophie to have started before birth since I was clicker training her mom while she was pregnant with the litter. The purpose of the clicker is to mark the behavior that you want so you could also just use a word like "yes" or "Yay" or "good dog" followed by a treat. I use clicker training to train a variety of behaviors such as sit, down, attention, name response, stay, stand, go to mat, front, point, hand targeting, and the list goes on. I also use it in agility training.

    These front-attaching harnesses work really well in my experience. As soon as the dog starts to pull, it will turn itself towards you, slowing it down. Otherwise the dog has every bit of freedom to do what it wants.
