Looking for a breeder

Breeder Talk
  • Since you got her from a Pet Shop, I would encourage you to apply for a pet shop puppy report from http://www.petshoppuppies.org/psppuppyreport.htm
And to file a report about his dying so young.

I would also encourage you to always look for responsible breeders, so you don't have to go through something like this again, and so that the for-profit only breeders are not encouraged to continue producing sickly puppies, that they do not take responsibility for, and continue over-breeding their stock.

    Please read this:
    http://blacksheepcardigans.com/ruff/?p=3452

If you want a pup that you can be proud of giving a second chance to, please consider adopting from BRAT.

  • I filled out the form. The article is a little harsh for a person who just lost a loved one, but revealing nonetheless and eye-opening.

  • Getting a dog from rescue or getting a pup from a quality breeder is the way to go, imo.
That way, you can have your pet for 12+ years instead of 5.
    Sorry for your loss.

  • Hi, welcome to the forum. Very sorry for your loss and i hope you find another Basenji companion soon.

  • @Khan33:

Thank you for the information, i am in FL so Serengeti would be the the better choice. Im not so much concerned with the breeder credentials as i am trying to finding a puppy that will be a relative to my puppy if possible.. I got him at a pet store with many diff. problems and we felt pride in taking in a "dis-guarded" pup if you will and feel wonderful to know he had the best 5 years of his life as we possibly could give him..

Not sure that I understand why you would not be concerned with the credentials of the breeder? Especially after losing one so young? I would think that you would want to be extra diligent to find a responsible breeder that breeds healthly Basenjis and health tests before breeding.

Sorry to hear about your loss, it is hard when they are that young. What did you lose him from?

  • The preliminary from the vet is a dog flu that developed into pneumonia. He woke up on 1/22 with a difficulty breathing (just breathing ALITTLE heavier than normal) so we took him to the vet, they gave him some medication (an expectorant i believe) and we took him home. 5 or 6 hours later he started breathing VERY heavily and we took him to the E.R. where they put him in an oxygen crate and at 4:00am on 1/23 he had passed. Very unexpected as he never had any health problems before that besides the hernia (which im told is common) and he had cloudy eyes (which didnt affect his sight at all) and besides his normal checkups never had to go to a vet.

And his bloodline led me to believe he was bred from a reputable breeder, searching online i have found a cpl of brothers and sisters that are healthy

  • Your puppy sounds like he had Iris Sheets PPM which can cause vision issues. It is like looking through a thin piece of fabric instead of seeing clearly.

Basenjis have several late onset disorders that would not necessarily be known in 5 years time. PRA, another eye disorder, does not usually onset until 7 years or later and others like IPSID, hypothyroidism, and Fanconi if you did not do that DNA test. Having Clear relatives does not mean that there are not also Affected relatives. When Carrier is bred to Carrier you can Clear, Carrier, and Affected.

  • And breeders that do not register their dogs with AKC are not responsible. The reason that people like this breeder use other then AKC is so they do not have to conform to AKC requirement of DNA parentage for high volume breeders (or pure for profit breeders)

  • @Khan33:

And his bloodline led me to believe he was bred from a reputable breeder,

No ethical breeder would sell their puppies to a pet store so no, he did not come from a responsible breeder.

I am very sorry for your loss Khan33. I understand your desire to try to find a dog just like the one you lost however every dog is an individual and even siblings or offspring will be unique. You can't replace the one you lost but you can help fill the void you feel. Perhaps it might be better to redirect your focus from finding the same breeder to finding the puppy or dog who is the best match for you. The links in the preceeding posts to the Basenji Club of America is a great place to start your search.

    My best wishes.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I did not mean to seem overly harsh, but I am glad you found the article eye-opening.
I am very sad that you lost your boy so young.
Please consider giving a homeless dog a second chance, or buy only from responsible breeders for a pup.
    it really is worth it.

Go to www.basenji.org, you can search by state/country as BCOA has members in Canada or breeders in the Pacific North West can give suggestions.

Yes, Arlene, you do need at some point to take a stand and trust what you see and what you like… Breeding comes down to that in the end.... And with a bitch that is only 1 1/2 yrs looking down from the top is not a very good judge... IMO... reason?... They are not mature yet... and they shouldn't be.... their ribs have not even "sprung" at this age.. again IMO.... I would be hard pushed to say a dog is "wider" in the front then the rear at this age by just looking down on them.... again IMO.... Here is a link to 3 pictures of Kobey, 6wks, 3 months and 5 1/2 months... everything I saw on this pup at 6 wks that I liked (and that is a bit early then the 8 wks usually used for evaluating pups) I still see... but there are differences while growing... Now granted this pup is one of the few that has yet to really fall apart with a growing spurt... And also the faults that I saw at 6wks are still there too..... www.tanzabasenjis.net/kobeygrowing.html

@khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
