Basenji proof

  • I would fix that gap asap. If the B learns that it's a weak spot, it will never forget, and then it may take even more extensive measures to B-proof it. Even if it couldn't fit through now, it could probably dig out in 2 minutes. It's not enough to be B-proof now, you've got to stay a step ahead. I even suggest putting a trench of lava rock around the inside of the fence. B's do not like to dig through that stuff.

  • @JoeyQ:

I thought I was so clever when I got a few pop up covered trach cans. If Joey can't open it by stepping on the pedal, he just knocks it over! No problem.
I would put away the shoes at the front door if your B will have access to them. Joey loooooooooooooooves shoes! (If you want a new pair of shoes, well then of course keep them out! :D) and that goes for remodeling too. If you need a room remodeled, just leave the little B to do his work. It's free demolition!!! I am thinking of redoing my bath….

I guess the shoes will have to be cold in the morning and go into the garage.
Oh I hope our B never does anything to this house (we rent) that would be a sad day for me. I will be with Guru at all times though and if not he will be in his crate or with my dh.

Under our fence all the way around is cement there is no way he can dig his way out. When we were looking into houses to rent we took having a basenji into mind (the owner even put a new taller fence in for us):) On the one side yard there is a grass area ut rocks all alond the fence over there (the ppl who live here before us had a dog we keep finding their doggy toys in the yard)

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
