Question regarding stomach issues

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Yaaay congratulations on your poop Otis :D
Seriously Petra i am pleased he is getting better

  • Glad Otis is better.
My second beastie was a trash diver and I finally bought one of those bathroom cans that open only when you step on the lever. It works well for me.

  • Wizard,
That is exactly the type of trash can I want to find. Thanks for telling me that you have one and your smart b's are leaving it alone..
Yes Otis is much better, I am still giving him his meds per the vet and the bland foods, so his poor botttom has a break, and he is bored with the food let me tell you..but in desperate times..ha ha.

  • Don't know how tall Otis is, but be aware that they can still figure out the step on cans - especially if 2 of them work together! We have 2 that figured out if one stepped on the lever, the top would open and the other one could drag stuff out or even tip over the whole can! Aaah, Basenjis, too bad Coren thinks they aren't smart, LOL

  • ok, so that made me laugh..I bet it is a sight to be seen when they team work like that..Otis is tall, 17+ in his shoulders, and he is trying to figure out our step butterfly opening trash can in the kitchen..scary.

  • You could always try a little tee tree oil or vicks vapo rub around the rim to keep him away.

  • That would probably work, because he hates the smell of tea tree oil..I will try that.
So far he has not even paid attention to the trash cans, but our new foster Dotty, she is a pain, she even came running through the house last night with the trash can lid stuck around her neck…darn dog..

  • I told you before how Ashley has gotten Jaycee to leave all of our trash cans alone. Ashley chased Jaycee through house like it was after her it was funny and Jaycee did not get hurt in any way. She did not want that trash can to touch her then she took the can back to kitcken and waited Jaycee went in looked at can and Ashley just took her foot and kind of moved it Jaycee was like no that thing moves. Then Ashley was taking big trash cans out by road for trash day we had Jaycee out on leash was like o no thoses are the parents got to get into house right now they also move. Trash can story over.

  • I am just seeing this thread and so glad Otis is OK! You feel so helpless when your pup is sick and you don't know what to do.

We have a small metal trash in the bathroom with a lid and a step-on pedal. My Nicky just raises the lid with her little nosey-nose and steals tissues! I always took 'female things' directly outside to the big trash can!

  • Macpack, that is exactly what I will be doing from here on out, even though I got a new fancy trash can. Who knows, he might not have gotten so sick from trash digging, but I am not willing to take another chance..
Yes helpless is definitely how you feel.. but he is all well, still on antibotic and bland foods, but I am slowly introducing his normal diet, and I bought some probiotics and digestive enzymzes for him to take as well..any thing for a healthy gut..lol

The FDA can only do what the laws allow and if the govt is controlled by lobbyist, well.... But this isn't the place for politics so I'll leave it at that. I am very sorry about your horse. :( With meat.. it's particularly red meat that research is linking to cancer... early research shows amount is a big factor (recommendations from 4 oz a day to max 18 oz a week), but who knows. Processed meat is the worse, and I saw some headline (didn't bother to read since I like my beef shortly after it stops mooing) that well done steaks more carcinogenic. For the world, reducing red meat is good for the environment and health. I was reading a study last week on red meat and joint inflammation. Studies the last 15 years actually only have general connection, but that most do is a pretty good indicator. I had a doctor tell me to stop all red meat and milk when I was a teen and experiencing joint pain. It helped, but back then, no internet and not much access to current research. Here we are 45+ years later, and still no strong proof and some show that reducing carbs with increased LEAN red meat actually decreased inflammation. However, we then get this Science Catch-up. Red Meat And Gut Inflammation: Harvard Study ... https://thehealthsciencesacademy.org/science-catch-up/science-catch-up-28/ Jan 18, 2017 - Red meat and gut inflammation: Harvard study. According this new Harvard study involving 46,500 participants, eating high amounts of red meat daily might be a risk factor for gut inflammation and the development of diverticulitis. << So no one has absolute proof, but my money is on reducing red meat is more likely to be healthier than not. I just don't rule out all meat (ie fish and fowl) as getting enough protein is pretty hard and we don't have enough hard research for ME to go vegetarian. But I'm open to it and glad you are having success.

@Patty: Personally I would take her to the vet to get her checked out for bowel or urinary infections. If she is losing sight and hearing she may be frightened. It sounds as though you need to step back a pace to calm your reactions. I can appreciate that you are getting fed up with all the work but she is an old dog. My present oldie (15) has taken to peeing (and pooing) indoors at times but I know I need to put her outside more often as she doesn't have the control she once had. She has also become blind and is certainly more aggressive with the others because of that. Any way first things first and do take her to the vet, please. Let us know how you get on. I have to agree with everything Patty wrote. Changing behavior ALWAYS needs a vet check. Increase aggresssion can be due to thyroid issues, pain, tick-born diseases, constant hunger (due to other things), etc. You didn't say in your post if you'd recently seen a vet and discussed her new issues. My oldest (16 in December) has failing kidneys (nonFanconi) and does need to pee more often. So, I put pee pads down in the house in his favorite pee spots. He's usually pretty good about that, but he does still pee in other spots if I'm not watching him carefully or if he gets a bit aggitated about the sitting arrangements. Would your pup stay in an exercise pen? That would give her a little more room than a crate.

@tanza: These kinds of problems are not uncommon when your Basenjis start to reach their "golden" years. You might want to try him on Dr. Dodd's liver cleansing diet. http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/Liver%20cleansing%20diet.htm Many have used it and had great results regardless of what you find out the issue might be. Good Suggestion Pat as I had an older B with liver issues in 2008 and that diet brought it down into normal range.

I know you can't know if she was weaned too early, but I have seen other dogs "comfort suckle" their toes or the ear tips of another dog. Does she make nursing motions with her mouth and tongue when falling asleep? We had an orphan calf (years ago) that would seek out the first 2 fingers on any available hand to calm/comfort himself. He did this well into adult hood.

I got worried giving kiro so many bones, so i would take lots of old shoe laces and tie them in her crate on the side.ONe big sting with tons of THICK knots and let her pull it off and that kept her busy. You just have to make sure they wont swallow it. (she didnt) and make the knots big and thick. she loved the challenge of getting them off the side of her crate. it helps if your worried about to many bones…..
