The Drawback of Veggie Loving Dogs

  • I know Jaycee likes carrots cooked with noodles and garlic. If we have artichoke just get out of her way as she is kitchen bond.

Garlic? So Basenjis are the only dogs whom garlic is not toxic too?

Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder). Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.

  • It is ok the juice of the garlic is not on Jaycee's she loves the noodles and carrots beacuse of butter the garlic smell maybe there I am the only one in my family to eat the garlic. Sorry habit to say noddles and carrots and garlic because that is the way it is made for me. Jaycee and family miss out. My fault for not saying in first place no garlic for Jaycee. How ever with that said thank you.

  • @lvoss:

My dogs love veggies. It does not matter if they are raw or cooked. Today I was making some grated carrot salad for lunch later today. I had grated one carrot and realized I left the recipe in the other room. So I pushed the bowl back but not has far as I usually do and went to get the recipe. I then hear a crash and come back into the kitchen to see my dogs scarfing down my grated carrot! Luckily I had enough carrots to start over again making my salad. It is now safely marinating in its dressing for lunch.

Ha! Silly dogs!:D Nala drinks my coffee if I don't put it high enough out of her reach!
By the way, can you post the recipe? I love carrot salad and
am in need of a good one???

  • Not really a recipe me my homemade junk cooking. I take carrots and add broccoli sometimes steam them until there done. Put lots butter over them and sometimes I even have grilled chicken strip's what ever in mood for or what's in house. I use garlic one of two ways in case I do not have one or the other. I take garlic butter and melt it pour it over my veg's or I take garlic powder ( I get it at health food store so it is real garlic) and butter melt butter stir in.

I like garlic so much I have put it in lots of foods but here is one do not do. Never ever put garlic in cream corn it does not work at all.

  • Easy Sesame Carrot Salad

    2 Carrots (medium to large)
    1 Tblspn Lemon juice
    1/2 Tspn sugar
    pinch of salt
    dash of soy sauce
    1/Tblspn sesame oil
some roughly chopped parsley. (adds a little color)

In a bowl mix lemon juice, sugar, salt, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Peel and grate the carrot. Toss the carrot and parsley in the dressing. Refrigerate for at least an hour to allow the flavors to mix and mellow, longer is better. Stir well before serving to make sure the dressing is well distributed.

  • :) Thank you! It sounds delicious.

  • LOL mine all love veggies too- even Chloe, the mystery mutt (possible Basenji mix, I dunno).

I've been making a LOT of zucchini bread lately (chocolate chip zucchini bread being the most popular by far) and the dogs will sit behind me in the kitchen and wait eagerly for me to toss them the stems & heels of the zucchini.

The first few loaves of zucchini bread I made, I used a HUUUGE zucchini grown in a friend's garden- this thing was the size of a 2 liter soda bottle, only longer. I made the mistake of feeding the dogs a little too much zucchini that day. Let's just say that's the day I learned that Zucchini is VERY high in fiber. :)

Jibini got a new nickname- as this was his first experience with zucchini and he devours it more eagerly than the other 2….so we call him Jibini Zucchini :)

  • At first Gossy wouldn't eat veggies for me (I guess I didn't cook them the way the breeder does) but now she devours cooked green beans and will jump all over me if I'm eating watermelon. But too much melon and … well you can guess :D

  • Mmmmmm - recipe sounds delicious - we thank you for posting!

If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

Jaycee digs same way but she does somersaults head down over she gos first time neighbor saw it they could not beleive it. I think neighbor came over every day for a week waiting to see it again and Jaycee would do it. Yes I very much second that digging usually will cause the great B-500. Rita Jean

Cory and Jayden have foam inside a pillowcase on the bottom of their crates. On top of that are dog crate beds that are wrapped in old babycrib sheets. They each have two little baby receiving blankets in the beds so they have something to "rough up" for when they make their beds comfortable at night. Sometimes Jayden gets too enthusiastic and gets all the cushions etc all bunched up in a big mound in his crate and he can't lay down. I have to remove him and completely remake the bed before he can go back in to sleep. Sometimes before he goes in his crate to sleep, he'll stand up and remove Cory's baby blankets from her crate (on top of his)….......just to irritate her at bedtime. And it does irritate her! Pat

Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs
