Basenji with an upset stomach

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Have just had a phonecall from my mum to say that Tilly has had really bad diarrhoea - cant think what has caused it.

She goes down to stay with my mum while i am at work - my mum had to pop out for half an hour, so put her in a crate on the stair landing, which is right in front of a window, so she can look out at everything. When my mum got home Tilly had somehow managed to escape from a securely locked crate (the type with double metal latches on each door). One of the doors only had 1 fastening still in place, so she must have somehow moved the latch and then squeezed out a tiny gap by forcing the door outwards. Doing this she had turned the crate completely around - so it was facing in the opposite direction. Obviously she didnt want to dirty her bedding which was pristine. Then she ran about the lounge, kitchen, hallway etc squirting everywhere.

Otherwise she seems fine - infact my mum was laughing (thankfully) as she said Tilly jumped up on the couch and looked very interested as my mum tried to clean the cr*p out of her REALLY expensive suede rug.

As she is bright and acting her usual self I dont want to get too worried about it - she is always stealing things she shouldnt and picking up anything she can in the street - she always gets fed the same (either Royal Canin or Challenge complete, together with a sardine or a wee drop of tuna or chicken to taste).

Will just give her some plain rice with a bit of tuna in it tonight, and see how she is in morning.

  • We give our b's some live yoghurt , about a dessert spoon, plain not flavoured, a little pot in tesco's costs about 28p they love it and it helps the guts friendly bacteria.

I hope Tilly's tum settles down, if she's bright I wouldn't worry too much.

Your poor mum, good thing she has a sense of humour!

  • I give mine live yoghurt also if the have an upset tum, works a treat.

  • Thanks Basi/Moetmum, will give it a try.

  • hope she is feeling better soon. Your poor mom, not a fun job.

  • She seems absolutely normal - thumped my 110lb dobe male for daring to walk near her when she was resting, chased the cats, caught a mouse. Resilient little B&**ers these basenjis!

  • Good news…

Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

I agree with Buddys Pal… if they didn't do either urinalysis or xray, I'd get them done. If you have a sick dog and the vet just sort of says "oh well, blood work looks okay".. may be time for a new vet. Something is obviously wrong.

Yes, Spencer is much better now, but he is still very thin. He lost six pounds. Even strong antibiotics cannot fight a severe abscess. I'm sure your vet found and resolved the problem under anesthesia, so that should put Egyn over the hump. SubQs and a few weeks of antiobiotics will hopefully get him back on the road to health. I had to feed Spencer critical care dog food through a syringe for several days after the surgery, then make him special soft food– the aforementioned meatballs-- for weeks after that. Good luck to you-- and positive thoughts to Egyn!

I saw that you have a sewing machine – its not hard to make your own coat. I made one for my previous beasties with fleece and wool. I made it with a high colar (for the backside of the neck) and an indentation for the tail and a big belly and chest band (I used snaps at first but then switched to velcro). It worked pretty good for our single digit temps (and the occasional below zero walks to the corner). My current beastie refuses to go out the door with a coat on, however. When the outside temps are below 10F she won't stay outside any longer than necessary to go potty - the squirrels can run around all they want then! With respect to booties, mine will at least tolerate them when we go for walks but it's more for the road salt. However, the good pair I bought this year leak somehow (maybe through the stitching?) and she doesn't like them with they get wet inside. Nevertheless be sure you get the best you can find.

Yes–I forgot that there are actually homeopathic vets available. We are so lucky here in the Bay Area--we have great vets, specialists and also UC Davis veterinary school/drs not too far away--and believe me--I have used all of these resources over the past 18 years.....

My vet told me I could give a whole benadryl tablet for his seasonal allergies. I sometimes give him half a tablet and hide it in some cream cheese. I boiled a chicken leg with some rice, carrots and green beans. His stool seems to be getting better since I gave him 1/2 an immodium last night.
