Basenji Rescue

  • @Forever:

I see a curly sue and mogi listed on brat in nevada are these them?

Yes, I believe those are them….. if I remember the pictures

  • Brat does know about these 2 b's..in fact have posted them on the BRAT site, even tho the shelter will not give them up to BRAT.
So, we have done all we can.
I so hope someone will open their hearts and home to these 2 b's.

Why won't the shelter give them to BRAT?

I just looked at the pix. Curly Sue looks rather thin.
I'm praying for these two old darlings.
    Breaks my heart.

  • I went to visit them yesterday and the staff said that they had both been adopted, apparently together.

That is great news… and many time shelter will not just give them up to rescue... here in No Ca... we have two shelters next to each other... one will call breed rescue if they have a purebred... the other will NOT... as they claim they get "more" money when they place a purebred...

Glad to hear the great news! Are those shelters in the East Bay?

Ugh. I hate shelters that charge different fees for purebred or mixed breed dogs. It just keeps up the idea that purebreds are inherently "better" than mixed dogs. And for some things they are–we probably wouldn't be on this board if we all didn't like purebred basenjis--but for shelter rescues? Bah. I totally understand charging different rates for puppies in the hopes that they'll help float the less adoptable dogs, or lowering the fee on senior or sick dogs to get them into homes faster. I even understand a purebred rescue knocking off some money for a mix, but it's kind of...unseemly for shelters to do so, I think.

Yes they are….. (both in the East Bay)

    I totally agree….

  • Yea….win/win...and someone has a very nice pair of settled b's.

We rescued our current B from Medfly - just north of LA. Karen at Medfly was wonderful to work with and we love our little girl!

He did look like he had short legs but I thought his body was long for a Rat Terrier. I am so used to them having a docked tail and much more white on the body. I thought he may be a poorly bred Basenji. Mansfield is not too far away from the Amish area. I wonder if he barks much! Jennifer

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

Macpack, Thanks for the update. It is nice to know that Kona and Keoki are so happy together and that Lisa and her husband must feel so good knowing they did a great thing..

@BasenjiDiva: Wow, Vicki. Although we are down in Savannah, we also have a place up between Young Harris and Hiawassee. Maybe we could meet up sometime. Don't know how our little female hellion would do with your female though. Our male would probably be okay. Also would love to hear more about your petsitting business that you mentioned. When we are up there we would sometimes like to be able to leave for awhile without worrying about the beasties. Pat Hello - Yes, I would love to meet you when you visit your vacation home. razzcinn at aol dot com. I have two female Basenjis that are doing well together, but I, too, would be concerned about another female Basenji. Monday, I'm interviewing a retired older lady who pet sits and she will stay in the home all day and night, if needed. I need a dependable sitter, too. I often babysit for people who would like to go to dinner and get away w/o worrying about their pets. If I can't help you, I'm certain I can recommend several other dependable sitters.
