i just ordered the test yesterday. and hopefully it will be clear, he is a pet shop basenji!!. and i'm learning as i go with him. i do want to breed him but i have to wait for the test!!. i have a 5 generation on him but i found out from a friend that his g,g,ggrandpa has the fanconi!!. but nothing had been shown with the others in his 5 generation!!!. this is scary for me!!!.
Please think very careful before you consider breeding him. There are lots of different threads on the Forum about being a responsible breeder. The first being "why do you want to breed" And "have you done all the health testing, not just Fanconi". If he is a pet shop puppy, then he came from a Puppy Mill, so the question is, "what does he have to offer the breed" Responsible Breeders show or do performance events to quantify what that particular dog has to offer, along with health and temperament. Responsible breeders know the background of the dogs they want to breed, know the other offspring, use that in the decision to breed or not to breed.
Another good place to learn how to find a responsible breeder is at www.basenji.org/learn and then go to screening breeders. This will tell you what people should be looking for in a responsible breeder.
