    All my dogs love to eat grass - especially for 'pudding' after their meals. I just let them get on with it! It seems a perfectly natural thing to do to me.
    They also like to harvest the wild strawberries we have growing in abundance this year. Strange thing is, they sniff out the ripest ones and only eat those. The puppies have learned to do it too. Very amusing to watch!

    I don't worry about Gossy eating grass, which she does occasionally (we don't have wheatgrass here in MN but maybe I'll try to find some seed to grow just for her).
    However, I do have to watch because the grass doesn't always digest in her and comes out as a stringy mass when she poops - or rather I should say it hangs off her rear end :eek:

    I now toss in some green beans and other veggies and that has seemed to reduce their need for eating grass a little.

    I never forget when our dachshund Gus had eaten a ballon, needless to say we didn't know it was a ballon until I had to help him get rid of it..I slowly pulled this red object out of his behind with a well rubbergloved hand..pop, out flies the ballon…gross, unbelievably gross, and my husband is on the floor laughing so hard, because apparently my face had said it all..I will never "rescue" Gus again, when he has eaten something questionable..

    dmcarty - how do you prepare the vegies or do you just give them raw? Gossy won't eat raw vegies (but she will eat melon, apple, and well-cooked pumkin or sweet potato).

    I had a fun experience with that the other week. Kananga decided to "scoot" his behind on the pavement to get it off. Highly illogical, as it simply smeared it allover his behind and tail. He looked at me like he had just won an Olympic medal.

    He learned once I plopped him in the bathtub that it was not quite a success after all. :o

    Well they are quite partial to the veggie medely from Applebees. But if it's green beans - I just open the can - heat it up a little - or pour a can in a plastic bowl and toss in a handful or two of minute oatmeal. I used to sprinkle some garlic powder on it but now all my dogs actually like it - and the Podengos - well if you looked at the flower video I posted - they like to eat their greens raw. Now if I could just get them to eat the weeds instead of the flowers.

    I just love the way they bounce. We didn't know what we were getting into and we can just watch him bounce for hours. Boing boing. The taller the grass, the more we love to watch.

    I read somewhere that one of the other African natives names for the Basenji translates as the the "jumping up and down dog". Of course, we all know that Basenji means "wild thing of the bush."

    I don't get other dogs in the yard but I do get foxes, she will sniff but isn't bothered.

    It would be useful to know more about this dog. Has resource guarding been an issue in the past? Has he bitten either you or your wife before? (a real bite, not playful nipping). Or anyone else? A dog that isn't used to children may be fearful of their loudness or quick movements. Perhaps you could do some socialization work with him, e.g. hanging around places where young kids congregate to accustom him to their noise and activity. Obviously not allowing any interaction as you are unsure of his behaviour. Dogs react differently to newborns. In my experience bitches are more likely than dogs to be tolerant, but it is very much the individual dog's reaction that counts. People have been blindsided when their supposedly tolerant and gentle dog turns out to be hostile to a young child. Bottom line, no dog should be left unsupervised around young kids, so in any event you would have to monitor his behaviour carefully once your baby arrives. On a personal note, of the five Basenjis I have owned, two bitches were entirely reliable with kids, the other was tolerant as long as they respected her space. One of the males adored children and was curious about them, the other curious but uncertain and would react to fast movements. I did not trust him and controlled any interaction closely. IMO, he would have bitten had he felt threatened. And kids, especially babies, tend to grab and pinch, ears, tails, whatever. Caution is always the safest route.

    Started peeing in the crate again

    Just thought I'd share an update on this. I removed the blankets from the crate and replaced them with a mattress. We have been strict about her only staying in the crate at night. When we have had accidents I have cleaned up, with a dog urine killing spray, and placed her back in the crate. Everything is progressing smoothly, not had any accidents for over a week now. So it's been a rather quick turnaround, lovely to have her properly crate trained again. Thank you all for sharing advice on the situation.

    Cory and Jayden loathe wet grass….especially Jayden. Cory will at least get off the patio long enough to pee. Jayden uses the patio. And he thinks the flower bed next to the patio with its nice dry pine straw is his personal potty! That is where I have to do most of my pooper-scooping. Pat

    Sahara knows what to do, I always say to her, "Go Potty, Be a Good Girl!!! She looks at me like as if to say, "You gotta be kidding, get my sweet paws wet, out of the question"! I use to just let her out the front door and she would got immediately to the grass and pee, now she won't !!!!! It is becoming a tug of war, I will carry her out on the leash and she will try to get to the front of the house, so she can stand on the sidewalk, or pull to get to her doggie door. I didn't have time to take her out this morning, have to get up earlier to do this. I didn't find any wet carpet today so I guess she went outside. The saga continues, these Basenjis are strange creatures!!!!! Thanks for your suggestions, I will try them!!!!!
