    Just a quick hi to you folks out there, I stumbled upon the forum and have been watching interesting bits, trying to learn more about Basenjis!

    I'm from northern Ontario, canada, and have a broken 'c' key on my laptop. :rolleyes: So I have to copy-and-paste any 'c' I use, so 'canada' may sometimes be spelled all in lower-case. I'm a 21-year-old university student, a history major. My best friend and I found out about Basenjis a few months ago, and have decided that one day we would like to get to know the breed better, possibly have one of our own.

    Well, my boyfriend (Psychology major) let me know that in the near future (thinking a year, perhaps less), he would like us to have a dog. I danced around the room today, but thought that it would be good to get to know more about the breed before I pushed them onto him. Been doing lots of reading, you all have gorgeous dogs, by the way. :)

    Many of us have websites, plus you can look at the many national kennel club sites, and BCOA to learn more and get more photos. It is great that you are looking into the breed well before getting one as they are quite different than many other dogs. There are also several others from canada, even in your area probably, that are on here as well.

    Welcome to the forum, and I hope you are able to learn all you can and make the right decision for a dog. Even if you don't end up getting a basenji, there is also a lot of general dog owner information on this site for you.

    Welcome! Being owned by basenjis is a way of life, thoroughly enjoyed by those who are proud when their dog outsmarts them. A sense of humor is a huge requirement, as well as minimal attachment to material possessions (if your basenji is a chewer). But living with them is pure joy! Good luck with your boyfriend, have him meet one or more in person if possible, they have a way of stealing hearts.

    Thank you for going to a responsible breeder and I believe that your pup is related to my Basenjis.     Those muttlucks look wonderful! There are lots of good websites that will show jackets and fleeces for your B. I wouldn't think feeding needs to change when it gets really cold unless he spends lots of time outdoors - some basenjis actually love the snow, so they say, although mine would not. Once the plows come through and you have running or walking room, his exercise doesn't have to suffer either. I lived in Vermont for a few years and our dogs (not basenjis then) managed just fine, both the longhaired ones and the sleek great dane. Basenjis have a lot less body weight, though, so a good warm fleece or fleece lined jacket would be in order. It gets real obvious when they're cold - they stop moving, shiver a lot, and try to get picked up! Of course mine does that at 55 degrees.

    Mind you, Bella was a surprise birthday gift from my husband. He wanted a boxer, but I wanted a smaller dog (he said he wasn't getting either). He went to a pet store:( and saw my girl… and fell in love with her!:eek: He arranged everything and proceeded to tell me we were going out and it was a surprise for my birthday. He blindfolded me:cool: and took me there and I didn't know where I was going until I walked into the store. I was asked to guess what my present was... then told to close my eyes while they got her. I didn't know until they put her in my arms who my sweetie girl was going to be.:D How could I resist this beautiful little Basenji baby bundle of joy! I never even imagined it would be a Barkless African dog. I don't approve of puppy mills or encourage them, "backyard breeders" either. But at that very moment these thoughts were further in the back of my mind:rolleyes: ...

    Ok now comes the story about Missy. Missy would destroy things around the house, get into the garbage, chew on socks and underwear. Mom would punish her , tell her she was bad, and Missy would go pout. Mom would have to leave her bedroom door shut for a week or Missy would go in and pee on Mom's side of the bed, but never Dad's side. who was punishing who?:p

    Welcome!! I would also add that Basenjis are high energy dogs…umm so good luck having them "calm" down :) But if you exercise them often they will come home to sleep! Which is great down time for you. They will also do these wild sprints around your house/yard/wherver there's space!! We call it the "Basenji 500" because it's JUST as fast as the Daytona 500 or the Indy 500 :)
