Keoki the Basenji

Basenji Rescue

  • our first b was jonny, age 2. our next was HAnsel. he is 5. we see some of the same with jonny wanting to play. HAnsel just kind of ignores him sometimes. but they do play a lot and most of the time in good fun. i dont let them get wild in the house. when they start in i take them out to play. they get it out of their system they come back in. some times HAnsel starts it. i dont ever let them get to the angry stage. they either quit or stay out side until they are calm. they seem to work it out them selves. we also will kennel them if they dont get calm after playing. that works too.

  • Keoki has been an only dog so it may take him a while to decide to play…or he may never be as playful. At this stage, just tolerating each other is pretty good! Sometimes it's "love at first sight", other times a pair may just be "roommates" who keep each other company and play occasionally. Like Pat said, it's usually best if they work it out (as long as they are not fighting!). It can take six months for a new relationship to settle.

    Great advise….

  • Hi everyone! It is official! Keoki is a permanent part of our family. We are so excited to have him with us. The funny part was after we made our decision last night it was like a switch flipped between him and Kona. The slept curled up to each other last night, and shared the bed in the sunny spot this morning. Before that they slept on opposite ends of the bed and would not share the sunny spot with each other. As soon as I can figure out how, I will post some pictures and change my avatar.

Awesome news. I am so happy for Kona and y'all, and of course for Keoki. Very good news.

  • I always thought they were telepathic!

Seriously, he may have picked up on your feelings of uncertainty, then felt the switch to "he's ours" last night.

  • I am doing a genuine happy dance for you and Keoki and Kona too! If I could baroo with joy like my pup does, I would. You will have to settle for the dancing, though, lol.

It is so great to hear these happy endings. Thanks so much to you for opening your hearts and home.

  • :) This is such happy news. Good for you!

  • Yay! That is adorable that they snuggled together…great news!

  • I swear they can read our minds - wonderful that Keoki and Kona are forever friends - even the names sound like they were meant to be together. So glad you took him in.

I agree with Shaye'sMom, they sound like they were meant for each other…even their names.

  • I love happy endings. Bless your heart for giving Keoki a home.

  • Lisa brought Kona and Keoki to the dog park today to meet the gang! He is a sweetheart, Lisa and her husband just adore him and you can tell Keoki is a very happy boy. He is so mellow, it was like he had known everyone forever, not a single ridgeback or grumble from anyone, just nose-sniff-hellos. He and Kona are cute together, he is tolerant of her puppy-antics. Beckaboo, you can relax in the knowledge that Keoki is in a wonderful and very loving forever-home now. It was really a thrill to meet him.

Macpack, Thanks for the update. It is nice to know that Kona and Keoki are so happy together and that Lisa and her husband must feel so good knowing they did a great thing..

He did look like he had short legs but I thought his body was long for a Rat Terrier. I am so used to them having a docked tail and much more white on the body. I thought he may be a poorly bred Basenji. Mansfield is not too far away from the Amish area. I wonder if he barks much! Jennifer

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

@BasenjiByTheBay: That's just wonderful, Vicki. Lucky Bailey and lucky you! Thank you for being devoted to rescue. Can't help you with the addiction - I surf for basenjis every few days even though there's no way we have room for more than our two. I was surfing petfinder.com today! Bad. Bad. Bad. I promised I would stop.
