Do Tri's have an extra "evil" gene?

  • whhhhhy why no creamies? 😢
Would it be possible with the genetic base we have between africa and our western Bs to have the cream colour reintroduced? I remember reading they were bred out because the breeders didn't like the colour, but does someone know the genetics behind what threw the creams in the first place?

  • I don't totally understand the genetics behind it, but cream is a dilute of red…and I think you have to have the gene present that causes the dilute...and I am thinking it may have been completely bred out of the western population of Basenjis. The only thing that comes close that I have seen a pic of is Siri, but she is more like what we would describe as fawn in other breeds...and is genetically, supposedly not a cream.

Here is a link to her African Stock page :

I am NO expert in color genetics or history…I am only repeating what I have heard other people say...but, personally, I doubt we will ever see cream, blue, or mahogany tris in Basenjis again, sadly....

  • For the record…I think the pics of Siri are one of the most beautiful Bs I have ever seen. I love the contrast of her dark pigmentation with her light coat color...I so wish we still had access to this color that we lost thru history....

  • Creams are not dilute reds. Dilute reds are called blue fawns in other breeds and can be seen in breeds like whippets and APBTs where they have reds and dilutes. When you see Siri in person you can see that she is truly a dilute or "blue" she has irridescent (sp?) fur like a weim but is red. We could see blue tris again and blues but it isn't likely since the gene is very rare in our population so unlikely to pair up and even less likely that it will pair up in a tri or black dog, but it can happen and with pedigree research a person could increase their chance of it happening.

It is believed that creams are caused by a gene on C (chinchilla) series, but we may never know exactly.

Thanks for clarifying that Lisa….I am in way over my head when it comes to anything beyond the basic Basenji color patterns of inheritance 🙂

  • @Craigh:

It sure seems so. My two red/whites were both typical Basenjis, but our new little Tri Bella sure seems to have an extra evil streak. She's got the sweetest disposition you could ever hope for, but it is punctuated by unexpected acts of getting into mischief.

Here she is laying down with my wife looking like the perfect angel. Next morning while my wife left her for 2 minutes to run to the bathroom, Bella managed to mangle a pair of my wife's reading glasses. Unfortunately they weren't a $10 Wal-mart set either. 😞

That's hilarious. I've fostered 2 Tri's, both female. The first was super sweet and spunky, not devilish at all. The second one was a hurricane coming in because of severe neglect (social, physical, etc.) but after 6 weeks she had learned to be a dog and was quite biddable, she's in the perfect home for her now.

So I'd have to say I haven't experienced the 'devil' gene 🙂

  • Yes!!!!!!!!!!!
    🙂

  • HAHAH I've actually heard this from a few people! Tri's are the tricksters!

  • We got an extra dose of evil yesterday. Bella spent a couple hours laying on the couch with my wife. When she woke up she decided it was play time. She grabbed the corner of the carpet (where two rooms join) and RIPPED IT UP OFF THE FLOOR!! This was tacked down carpet that she had never messed with before. Don't know where that came from. She had pulled up about a square yard before I caught her.

We're thinking about changing her name to DeMonica.
