    FYI - I saw the thread about The Basenji magazine. You can get a free sample copy of The Basenji by emailing julie@thebasenji.com - no charge for a free sample copy.

    If you are a Basenji breeder, you can request a free copy for any or all of your new puppy owners - just email Julie their names and addresses.

    If you do Basenji rescue, you can request a free copy for any or all of your new rescue homes - just email Julie their names and addresses.

    One sample per household please.

    If you like your sample copy and decide you'd like to subscribe, you can go online to www.thebasenji.com and either pay online (via PayPal or credit card) or mail a check to the address at the web site.

    @melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much.     @weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

    Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    I just purchased the magazine. It will probably take a little while longer to make it here to Canada (international mailing). I can't wait to get it.
