Eating rabbit droppings

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Now that the snow is gone, Gossy has been finding and eating some of the rabbit droppings in my yard. Enough so it shows up significantly when I took a poop sample to the vet. I've tried disposing of the large piles of droppings but there are lots of single ones that I miss but she finds. I know there is stuff you can put in their food to keep them from eating their own poop but that's not the problem here. Any suggestions?

  • I doubt that you will find anything to stop that… I never have... only it was "goose" poop

And I never saw or heard anyone that said the stuff you can put on their food will stop them from eating their own poop ever worked.... Knock on wood, I don't have any of them, except when on of my bitches had puppies.

  • Hi

I'll just add this in case the testing doesnt give you answers. Anorexia exits. Although nearly ALL cases of dogs who do not want food has an underlying medical cause. But some dogs simply have anorexia. There are drugs that work very good for it..At one point they stopped making one type so we had so we had to switch. They increased Sayblees aggression. So from then on i handfed her. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/anorexia-in-dogs

@JENGOSMonkey, @elbrant, @tanza, @Kembe, @eeeefarm, @helle-devi Thank you all for the kind words, it has not been easy but this does help. We actually got his ashes back today and the place did a fantastic job, came back with ceramic paw print and all. It will last bring final closure, he is home. @helle-devi results confirmed what was suspected, IBD, for which we had already started his medications. I think it was just his time.

Hi Shelley – Poppy did the same when she was a puppy with her own and the other dogs offerings but she has grown out of it now with the exception of rabbit droppings and as Scott says cat droppings which most dogs seem to find irresistible!. We have been feeding Royal Canin with no problems, so it may not be down to that. It may be a family trait! Steve.

Topper loves to eat dirt and he gets a good diet and a vitamin/mineral supplement from the vet. I think he likes the taste!

I used to have boys that would stop eating and get thin when females in the neighborhood were in heat. Glad he is eating and hopefully he will gain back his weight soon!
